Minor problems at various levels of gameplay have long been an unpleasant routine for Diablo 4 players. This time, the problem has affected those who play through Xbox Game Pass. When launching the game, many are faced with an error message stating: "Diablo 4 Was Unable To Open a Critical File." This error does not allow them to launch and enjoy the game. How To Fix "Diablo 4 Was Unable To Open a Critical File" Error

To fix this error, you must resolve the discrepancy between the latest updates and requirements to start the game. It sounds a little confusing, but figuring it out will make it easier to solve this in the future. This problem is solely because the game requires an update to run that you have not yet installed. At the same time, the Battle.net application does not offer to install the update, which plunges you into a vicious circle. Issues like these are not new in multiplatform games.

If you wait for a couple of days, you will probably receive an offer to update the game, and the error will disappear. But waiting is not always an option for fans, so let's look at a couple of methods that will help solve the problem here and now.

Check Updates

The first thing you should try is to exit the Xbox and Battle.net apps and then open only Battle.net. In some cases, you will immediately see a prompt to update the game, which will solve the error. After all, sometimes the right solution is the simplest.

Delete the Battle.net Folder

If the simple method does not help, you can delete the Battle.net file, thereby triggering a prompt to update the game. It might sound a little bit complicated, so here are the step-by-step instructions:

  • Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Escape and close all battle.net processes.
  • Open Run by pressing Win+R and enter C:\ProgramData\.
  • Delete the Battle.net Folder.
  • Once the process is complete, launch the Battle.net launcher, and your problem will almost certainly be solved.

Check Files Integrity

If these methods don't help, you may need to check the integrity of the game files:

  • Launch the Xbox app and open the Diablo 4 tab.
  • Click on the three dots to the right of Play, select Manage, and go to the Files tab.
  • Click Verify and Repair and wait for the process to complete.

That's all you need to know about how to fix another error in Diablo 4. The solutions we have given should be enough to solve the problem. But if all else fails, take a break from the world of Sanctuary for a few days until the error resolves itself.
