Summary

  • Astro Bot won Game of the Year at the 2025 DICE Awards.
  • The title also won awards for its animation and game design.
  • Sony plans to make similar games in the future, with Astro Bot's family-friendly style proving to be popular with gamers.

Astro Bot won the Game of the Year award at the DICE Awards 2025 on February 13, adding another feather to its cap. With the latest accolade, Astro Bot has continued its award-winning streak at major industry events, having picked up a host of similar honors over the past several months.

For a franchise that stemmed from a PlayStation 4-era tech demo, Astro Bot has come a very long way, with its newest namesake entry being recognized as one of the best games of 2024. The Team Asobi-developed platformer came out to a roaring reception last October and ended the year in the company of the most decorated games ever. Besides earning a plethora of accolades, including multiple Game of the Year awards, Astro Bot also recorded impressive sales, selling more than 1.5 million copies in its first two months. Keeping the momentum going, the PS5 exclusive recently won the biggest award of the night once again.

An Astro Bot Sequel May Not Be Able to Drink from the Same Well as the Original

Astro Bot is a loving celebration of PlayStation's long history in the gaming world, but it might not be able to be able to rely on that in a sequel.

At the 28th DICE Awards held on February 13, Team Asobi took home the Game of the Year award for Astro Bot, beating Balatro, Black Myth: Wukong, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Helldivers 2. In total, the action platformer bagged five different award recognitions, with the others being Family Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, Outstanding Technical Achievement, and Outstanding Achievement in Animation. The Sony-published game was also nominated in the Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition category, in which Helldivers 2 emerged victorious. Notably, Astro Bot's new Game of the Year win took place within a few weeks of its last win in the same category at the New York Game Awards in January 2025.

Astro Bot's Success Pushes Sony to Produce More Family-Friendly Games

Apparently, the immense magnitude of Astro Bot's success isn't something that PlayStation parent Sony has taken lightly. As a matter of fact, the game's scintillating performance has encouraged the console giant to produce similar titles going forward, as noted in a recent statement by Sony President Hiroki Totoki. PlayStation fans may expect more family-friendly games in the coming years, as the PS5 maker enters territory held most prominantly by Nintendo, thanks to IPs such as Mario and Donkey Kong.

In the meantime, Astro Bot players can look forward to more post-launch content arriving in the near future. The game's director, Nicholas Doucet, has revealed that the action game will soon get up to five new levels as well as a new time-based game mode. The first of the freshly added levels became available to players on February 13, 2025.
