Bandai Namco Entertainment has revealed new details surrounding the gameplay for Digimon Story: Time Stranger, including battle systems, Digimon personality types, and player abilities. Announced during February's PlayStation State of Play livestream, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is the first new game in the Digimon Story series since Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory was released in 2017.
In Digimon Story: Time Stranger, the player assumes the role of an agent of Special Investigation Bureau ADAMAS, a secret organization dedicated to investigating the supernatural. Joined by one of the three partner Digimon in Digimon Story: Time Stranger, players will travel between Earth’s Tokyo and the Digital World: Iliad to save both worlds from a mysterious entity that defies time itself. The new entry promises over 450 Digimon to encounter, some of which will function as rideable Digimon mounts.
Digimon Story Time Stranger Reveals Pricey Collector’s Edition
Bandai Namco pulls back the curtain on the Digimon Story: Time Stranger Collector's Edition, which carries a hefty price tag for fans to consider.
In a PlayStation blog post, Bandai Namco Lead Producer Ryosuke Hara dove into some of the gameplay strategies and skills players will want to familiarize themselves with when Digimon Story: Time Stranger drops on October 3. Featuring a turn-based battle system, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is similar to Pokemon in that it rewards strategizing each Digimon's strengths. Each Digimon has an Attribute and an Element, with seven possible attributes and 11 elements, all with their own resistances and weaknesses. Digimon can also have one of 16 possible personality types, all of which influence stat growth, skills, and conditions for Digivolution, which, unlike Pokemon, is non-linear.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Features a Turn-Based Battle System
The Digimon aren't the only ones with unique abilities: the player character has their own tricks up their sleeves, known as Agent Skills. As players complete ADAMAS missions, they'll earn points for unlocking Agent Skills with a variety of effects, including stat increases, simplifying Digivolutions requirements, and buffing Digimon with specific personalities, allowing for a number of possible character builds that prioritize certain team compositions. Agents who strengthen their bond with their Digimon can also unlock powerful abilities known as Cross Arts, which fuel the agent's device with the power of their Digimon to turn the tide of battle.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger will release across all major platforms on October 3. While some gamers might be disappointed that Digimon Story: Time Stranger will be locked to 30 FPS on consoles, the new foray into the Digital World after nearly a decade of waiting is an exciting and welcome surprise for longtime fans of the Digimon Story franchise.
