A brand-new Digimon game titled Digimon Story: Time Stranger was just announced at the recent February 2025 PlayStation State of Play livestream, with a trailer highlighting the upcoming title’s plot and classic monsters. While not quite reaching the heights of its rival franchise Pokemon, Digimon has been home to several video games in varying genres over the years, from the original virtual pet handhelds to the visual novel style of 2022’s Digimon Survive.

At last year’s Digimon Con 2024 convention, Digimon World: Next Order producer Takahiro Yokota addressed the possibility of another entry in the Digimon Story series, and while he didn’t immediately confirm such a game was in development, he didn’t deny it either. The first Digimon Story game was first released on the Nintendo DS in 2010 and would spawn multiple sequels, with the most recent release being a compilation of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Digimon Story: Hacker’s Memory on Nintendo Switch in 2019. Both these titles followed a traditional monster-raising JRPG format, with the player commanding classic Digimon creatures in turn-based battles.

Digimon Survival stuck out in several ways compared to past Digimon titles, and it could also act as a beacon for the series' future.

Now, a new entry in the Digimon Story series has been confirmed during February 12’s PlayStation State of Play livestream. The trailer for Digimon Story: Time Stranger sees a cel-shaded world being threatened by a mysterious threat as a female voice narrates about how an apocalypse looms over parallel dimensions. To combat this danger, the player will need to “embark on a journey” alongside the “gods, heroes, and monsters of bygone eras” known as Digimon.

Digimon Story: Time Strangers Release Window

  • 2025

From there, the Digimon Story: Time Stranger trailer shifts to footage of the game’s seemingly customizable protagonist running through a city, wielding some sort of laser gun, and riding on the back of a wolf-like Gururumon through fantasy landscapes. Longtime Digimon fans can likely spot many other classic monsters throughout the rest of the trailer, such as the franchise’s fire-breathing dinosaur mascot Agumon and his various evolutions, along with more menacing creatures like the insectoid Kuwagamon and troll-like Goblimon.

There was no official release date provided for Digimon Story: Time Stranger aside from a vague 2025 launch window, but its eventual release will certainly be a treat for Digimon gaming fans. It has been about three years since the last Digimon game and roughly seven since the last new entry in the Digimon Story series, but this drought will come to an end when Digimon Story: Time Stranger launches on PlayStation 5 later this year.
