Players who want to maximize the power of their Digimon in Digimon Story Time Stranger will need to have a solid understanding of the game's digivolution system. Indeed, players will need to digivolve and de-digivolve their Digimon numerous times in order to make them as strong as possible. This guide is here to provide more details on this process, and it will help players determine when they should digivolve and de-digivolve Digimon in Digimon Story Time Stranger.
Before getting into specifics, players should know that de-digivolving a Digimon can play an important role in pursuing evolution lines that may appear to be inaccessible. For example, if a player has taken a Digimon to its max level, but it does not have the stats required to digivolve into the desired form, de-digivolution may be the key. This is due to Cumulative Stat transfers and Talent in Digimon Story Time Stranger, and players will become familiar with these concepts as they read on.
What Happens When You Digivolve and De-Digivolve in Digimon Story Time Stranger
It is important that players have a basic understanding of what happens when they digivolve or de-digivolve a Digimon in Time Stranger, and the following list should provide that understanding:
- The Digimon transforms into the selected digivolution or de-digivolution. This will often mean a change to the Digimon's attribute and personality.
- The Digimon will become Lv. 1.
- If the Digimon is digivolved, its Talent will increase, raising its maximum possible level.
- If the Digimon has suitable Bond, then it will inherit new Cumulative Stats during digivolution and de-digivolution. More on this point can be found in the following section.
Bond & Cumulative Stats in Digimon Story Time Stranger
As noted, Cumulative Stats are stats that can be passed along during digivolution and de-digivolution, and they are displayed as blue numbers next to a Digimon's base stats. Players can increase a Digimon's Cumulative Stats directly by using Enhancement Items. A percentage of the stats that a Digimon earns through leveling up and training at the DigiFarm are also added to their Cumulative Stats when they digivolve and de-digivolve, and this is the key to making them as strong as possible.
The stats that a Digimon earns when leveling up are connected to their personality type in Time Stranger. Players should thus attempt to align their Digimons' personalities with their roles, as doing so causes desirable Cumulative Stats to increase more quickly.
To concretize this idea with an example, players could imagine that they have a Rookie Digimon on their team. The player increases this Rookie Digimon's stats as they work to take it to its maximum level, and then they digivolve it into a Champion. Players will then find that a portion of the stats that the Rookie earned through leveling up have been transferred to the Champion as Cumulative Stats, and they are shown in blue next to the Champion's stats. Players can then level up the Champion and, eventually, de-digivolve it into a Rookie to increase the Cumulative Stats that are transferred. This process can be repeated to keep boosting Cumulative Stats, and here it is in summary:
- Level up a Digimon to increase its stats.
- Digivolve the Digimon to convert a portion of the stats it earned into Cumulative Stats.
- Level up the digivolved Digimon to increase its stats.
- De-digivolve it to convert more Cumulative Stats.
- Repeat.
There is one wrinkle here: Digimon can only inherit Cumulative Stats a certain number of times, which is indicated by their Bond. For example, a Digimon with a Bond of 10 could convert its Cumulative Stats across 10 digivolutions/de-digivolutions, while a Digimon with a Bond of 50 could do so across 50. Players can increase a Digimon's Bond by sending them into battle, talking to them between fights, and feeding them at Time Stranger's DigiFarm, and 100 is the maximum that can be reached.
When to Digivolve & De-Digivolve in Digimon Story Time Stranger
With all of that said, players should generally plan to digivolve and de-digivolve a Digimon when it meets these two conditions:
- The Digimon's Bond is higher than the number of digivolutions and de-digivolutions it has already undergone, as this will allow new Cumulative Stats to be converted.
- The Digimon has started to level up very slowly.
With respect to the second condition, the level at which players digivolve or de-digivolve their Digimon does not need to be fixed. That said, Time Stranger players who want a general rule of thumb can plan to target Level 10 for Rookies, Level 25 for Champions, and Level 40 for Ultimates. However, the real goal is to make sure that you do not digivolve so frequently that it becomes impossible to reach the Cumulative Stat cap due to the max Bond restriction of 100.
Players can also consider only digivolving or de-digivolving when a Digimon hits its maximum level, as that will maximize the stats that they have earned and the number of Cumulative Stats that are converted every evolution. However, it can take quite a while to reach maximum level as a Digimon's Talent increases, and players should definitely feel free to perform transformations at lower levels.
