Summary

  • Dishonored 2 unexpectedly received a small update for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
  • The patch is quite small and appears to include bug fixes and language updates.
  • Arkane Lyon is currently working on Marvel's Blade.

One of the most highly praised Bethesda games of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 generation, Dishonored 2, has been surprisingly updated out of the blue, though it's not the update many fans were hoping for. Dishonored 2 was released at the tail end of 2016 and follows its beloved 2012 predecessor, adding a new playable protagonist, Emily Kaldwin. Missions like The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in the Slab stood out to gamers with their unique gameplay mechanics and intricate environments.

While Arkane Lyon developed Dishonored 2 and went on to make a name for itself with 2021's Deathloop, its sister studio, Arkane Austin, was unfortunately part of 2024's Xbox studio closures that also saw teams like Roundhouse Studios, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks shut down, although Tango was revived by Korean publisher Krafton. Arkane Austin was responsible for the original Dishonored, 2017's sci-fi adventure Prey, and 2023's poorly received co-op looter shooter Redfall. Thankfully, Arkane Lyon is still up and running, and is hard at work on Marvel's Blade in collaboration with Marvel Games.

Seemingly out of nowhere, fans of Dishonored 2 noticed that the game had recently received a small update on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. The update seems to be a small bug fix patch, though SteamDB mentions it updates the game's language depots. Dishonored 2's new update weighs in at just 230MB, but on Xbox, it requires a full update of the entire 40GB game.

Dishonored 2 Receives a Surprise New Update, but Not a 60 FPS Mode

While it's still not exactly clear what the purpose of this surprise Dishonored 2 update is, many are disappointed that it's not the performance boost fans have been hoping for. Despite nearly every other Arkane game being able to run at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, Dishonored 2 seems to be the only one that's still locked at 30. Even the original Dishonored and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, the short standalone spinoff game released in 2017, can run at 60 FPS thanks to boosts on Xbox and PlayStation. Perhaps Arkane Lyon has an FPS update in store for the game's tenth anniversary in 2026, though a 60 FPS patch may not be substantial enough to make fans wait for such a long time.

While many Arkane fans have been hoping for a third mainline Dishonored entry for some time, it would certainly be many years away if it's even in the cards at all. This is exacerbated by the loss of Arkane Austin, which will slow down the output of Arkane games considerably. Currently, Arkane Lyon has its third-person Marvel's Blade game in the works, which doesn't have a release window attached to it just yet.
