Summary

  • Fans are divided over Flynn Rider's appearance in Disney Dreamlight Valley, pointing out that he looks like a Sims character.
  • The Storybook Vale expansion includes new characters.
  • Flynn's resemblance to a Sims character is reminiscent of Belle's controversial appearance change.

Disney Dreamlight Valley fans are having mixed reactions to the reveal of Flynn Rider, who is scheduled to arrive in Disney's cozy life sim later in November. The male counterpart to Rapunzel from the 2010 animated film Tangled and its television show spin-off, it isn't Flynn's presence in Disney Dreamlight Valley that some fans are objecting to, but his physical appearance, as they believe that he looks like he should be in a Sims game.

In late October, Disney Dreamlight Valley revealed its Storybook Vale expansion, which weaves a tale of an idyllic land corrupted and torn apart by Disney villains Hades and Maleficent. Storybook Vale will be coming to the game's Expansion Pass subscribers in two parts, with the first scheduled to debut on November 20 and the second with a broader release window of summer 2025. The first part of the expansion will introduce Hades to the game but also comes with two new Disney heroes in the form of Merida from 2012's Brave and Flynn Rider.

While most fans seem to be happy with the selection of characters coming to the game in Storybook Vale Part 1, some think something about Flynn's appearance is off. Reddit user rosier101 posted a still image from the trailer that revealed Flynn, prompting multiple other fans to respond to his visage in common Simlish phrases like "dag dag" and "sul sul." Given his classic smolder look during the trailer, some fans are having trouble pinpointing just what makes Flynn look like he'd be more at home in a game from The Sims series. Ironically, some are attributing the problems to his nose, a physical feature that the rogueish character regularly complains about during his debut film, as the people drawing his wanted posters can never get it right.

Fans Think Disney Dreamlight Valley's Flynn Rider Looks Like a Sim

This isn't the first time that a debuting character's appearance has had fans of the game feeling wary. In September 2023, the arrival of Belle was met with similarly negative reactions, as her conversion to the 3D game world from the 1991 animated film Beauty and the Beast left her with facial features that fell into the uncanny valley and strayed from more traditional Disney proportions. A Disney Dreamlight Valley update from August fixed Belle's appearance, and some fans online have noted that if fan outcry could cause the developers to alter Belle's appearance, it could happen again for Flynn.

Less is known about what's coming to Disney Dreamlight Valley in Storybook Vale Part 2. A road map for the expansion gives it the title of Unwritten Realms and states that Maleficent will aid the player in solving the new region's mysteries, but no other characters have been revealed so far.
