Dispatch is a branching narrative game from AdHoc Studio, a team made up of former Telltale developers who know a thing or two about choice-driven storytelling. The choose-your-own adventure game follows former superhero Robert Robertson, who ends up working at a chaotic emergency dispatch center after losing his mech suit and temporarily demoting him from superhero to dispatcher. Instead of locking up villains, he now makes split-second decisions over a headset, and those choices come back around fast. The whole game lives and breathes through the relationships players have a hand in either building or destroying, making every new conversation just as important as the last.
In a recent interview with The Best War Games, voice actors Laura Bailey (The Last of Us: Part 2, Critical Role, Marvel's Spider-Man 2) and Erin Yvette (Hades 2, The Wolf Among Us, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon) talked about their time working on Dispatch and why one episode in particular stood out to them. Both of them immediately pointed to Episode 4 as their favorite, teasing that it is where things really start to shift in the story. Without spoiling anything, they hinted that this is the point where some big choices land hard and the relationships players have been building finally start to pay off, raising the stakes in ways that sound like they will catch a lot of players off guard.
Dispatch's Laura Bailey and Erin Yvette Favor Episode 4
Telltale veterans should be familiar with how choose-your-own adventure games like Dispatch work, with the player's dialogue choices generally having far more impact on the narrative than even many choice-driven RPGs can rival. According to Erin Yvette, Episode 4 of Dispatch is one such episode, as it seemingly puts players into a position where the choices they make will significantly alter their relationships with certain characters. When asked about what their favorite episode was and why, Yvette broke the ice with "I love 4," and then explained,
"A lot of important decisions are made. I also think it's an episode that shines a lot of light on certain characters and just adds some depth and nuance to Robert's relationship with them, and also just your general understanding of where they're coming from and what they're looking for — why they're there and what they want."
Upon hearing Yvette confirm that Episode 4 was her favorite episode, Bailey immediately chimed in with an emphatic, "I was going to say 4!" With that, there's a high chance that Episode 4 of Dispatch features one of the game's biggest moments, considering the two so adamantly agreed on it. Bailey added,
"I think Episode 4 starts in a very solid way that Nick and Pierre were like 'Here we go! Get ready, Laura!'"
Now, even though both Bailey and Yvette agreed that Episode 4 of Dispatch was their favorite, AdHoc Studio founders Nick Herman and Pierre Shorette's "Here we go! Get ready, Laura!" Direction suggests Invisigal will play a significant role in Robert Robertson's arc during the episode. Of course, this may only come down to the choices players make throughout the game's story, as actor Aaron Paul confirmed during a previous interview that recording dialogue for Dispatch took roughly two years due to the number of different paths players can take and the sizable cast of characters involved.
However it comes about, if Dispatch actors Laura Bailey and Erin Yvette both preemptively concluded that the game's fourth episode is their favorite, then it's likely they aren't alone in that sentiment. At the very least, players might want to pay special attention to their choices regarding Robert's relationship with Blonde Blazer and Invisigal during the episodes leading up to 4, in light of how in agreement Yvette and Bailey were about its importance to the narrative.
