Dissidia Final Fantasy is coming back from the dead, as Square Enix revealed that another entry is currently in development, with more details to come on October 14. However, the upcoming Dissidia Final Fantasy title is only slated for launch on iOS and Android, and the company has not stated whether other platforms will see a release down the road.

Originally launched in 2008 on the PSP, Dissidia Final Fantasy was a 1v1 fighting game that featured heroes and villains from across the Final Fantasy franchise battling in 3D arena brawls. Dissidia Final Fantasy later received an enhanced port in 2011, Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, which included more characters, including Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy 7 and Vaan from Final Fantasy 12. While the first two Dissidia titles are considered hidden gems on the PSP, the reboot, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, was not as fondly remembered by fans. Additionally, the free-to-play mobile game Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia was shut down in 2024.

Final Fantasy Has Good News For Physical Game Collectors

Square Enix announces some surprise Final Fantasy physical bundles that game collectors may want to add to their holiday shopping lists.

A New Dissidia Final Fantasy Is Coming to Mobile Devices

Despite these setbacks, Dissidia Final Fantasy is returning to the fighting game genre, which is planned for launch on Android and iOS at an undisclosed date. The next Dissidia Final Fantasy project will be a "team boss battle arena" game, though no details about its monetization models or system requirements were revealed as of this writing. Some of the initial images teased by Square Enix showcased various locations inspired by Tokyo, Japan, including a radio tower, a coffee shop, and a park. Additional images could be uncovered by clicking around. Some of the extra pictures depicted various objects, including three toy Moogles in a crane game, a motorcycle based on the Hardy Daytona from Final Fantasy 7, and a shopping bag with the word Artemis on it.

Square Enix added that more information about the next Dissidia game would be revealed in a YouTube Premiere on Tuesday, October 14, at 6:00 AM Eastern. The company also teased some of the characters that could appear in the new Dissidia Final Fantasy game, via 10 character silhouettes. While protagonists like Final Fantasy 7's iconic Cloud Strife and Final Fantasy 13's Lightning could be recognized by their distinct hairstyles, the identities of other potential characters remained a mystery.

With Dissidia Final Fantasy NT and Opera Omnia opening the door for characters from Final Fantasy's various spinoffs, including Ramza Beoulve from Final Fantasy Tactics, the next Dissidia title already has some potential as far as characters go. However, it remains to be seen how much of Final Fantasy's roster the forthcoming mobile title will utilize.
