Larian Studios has confirmed that its upcoming Divinity game will feature co-op multiplayer. Divinity was one of the most shocking announcements at The Game Awards 2025. The blood-soaked and incredibly graphic trailer left fans buzzing, and for good reason. Larian has proven to be masterful at making turn-based RPGs, and so many are already calling Divinity one of their most-anticipated upcoming new video game releases.
Larian has been a celebrated developer in the RPG space for years, with Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel helping the studio reach new heights. But it was the full 1.0 launch of Baldur's Gate 3 in 2023 is what really put Larian over the top and solidified it as one of the most-celebrated studios in the entire industry. The critically-acclaimed game earned a dizzying number of accolades and even managed to win the coveted Game of the Year prize at The Game Awards 2023. With how much success Larian enjoyed with Baldur's Gate 3, many were surprised to learn that the studio wasn't going to make Baldur's Gate 4, but it seems its next game will still share many similar elements and popular features.
"No, We Don't Want to Make the Same Game" Larian Responds to Divinity's Baldur's Gate 4 Expectations
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke acknowledges some players may expect Divinity to effectively be Baldur's Gate 4 but says that won't be the case.
The Divinity announcement trailer set the tone for what fans can expect from the game, but didn't feature any gameplay or specific details. In an interview with TheGamer, Larian cleared up some confusion and provided more information on what fans can expect from the new game. As revealed by Larian's Swen Vincke, Divinity will feature co-op multiplayer. Presumably, Divinity will follow in the footsteps of the studio's latest games and include 2-player local and 4-player online, but that has yet to be clarified.
One of the reasons Baldur's Gate 3 was so fun was because of its multiplayer support. It gives RPG fans the chance to explore the game world together, cooperating in turn-based battles or going off on their own. Some of the most fun you can have in co-op is in Baldur's Gate 3, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something fun to play with their friends.
Hopefully Divinity Can Avoid Baldur's Gate 3's Biggest Mistake
While I love Baldur's Gate 3 co-op and have dumped dozens of hours into it, there's no denying that the split-screen experience is a mixed bag. Baldur's Gate 3 split-screen is a blast, but it also suffers from unfortunate technical issues, particularly in Act 3, where lag and straight-up crashes are not particularly rare. Baldur's Gate 3 split-screen has improved thanks to various post-launch updates, but it would be great if Divinity is able to avoid those pitfalls out of the gate.
It's quite likely that Divinity will have an early access release like Baldur's Gate 3 did, but it remains to be seen if split-screen co-op will be a part of that experience. Unfortunately, we won't really have answers about Divinity's split-screen performance until the game actually comes out. As it stands, there is no release window for Divinity, but one has to imagine it will drop by the end of the decade.
