Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian Star Wars show for Disney Plus may be switching from its original plan and be released as a movie instead.
Starting with Rogue One: a Star Wars Story, Disney began to branch out in creating new Star Wars projects outside the main movie trilogies. However, Solo: A Star Wars Story received mediocre reviews and a lackluster box office. This may have caused Disney to switch up their plans for future projects and focus on series for their streaming service. Kenobi was initially planned to be a movie but was later developed into a Disney Plus series instead.
Disney is switching gears again and turning the upcoming Lando series starring Donald Glover into a movie. Stephen Glover, who is writing for the project along with his brother, was on an episode of the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast and mentioned the change of plans. “It’s not even a show,” Stephen Glover said. “The idea right now is to do a movie.” Glover also mentioned that, due to the strike, getting information about the project and what the studio is currently planning is challenging. “Right now because of the strike, it’s like telephone,” Stephen Glover said.
Glover couldn't provide much more information about the Lando film than that, although Lucasfilms did confirm to Variety that the project is now being developed as a movie. It is unclear whether the film will be released theatrically or directly on Disney Plus. However, it will likely be a theatrical release as Disney CEO Bob Iger recently stated that he wanted less content going straight to Disney Plus. This may have also been why the project was turned into a film.
The Lando Calrissian Star Wars project was initially announced in December 2020 with Justin Simien, the creator of Dear White People, attached to the project. After Simien left, the Glover brothers stepped in to work on the project. Although fans have been excited about the project, many are worried because of how long the project is taking to be developed. It is unclear if a script is finished for the movie, and with the current Hollywood strikes, the film’s development will take a while.
Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian was one of the best parts of Solo: a Star Wars Story, so hopefully, fans will finally get to see him again.
The Star Wars saga is available on Disney Plus.
