DK loves his bananas, but one Donkey Kong Bananza player has managed to beat the game without collecting a single crystal treat. Donkey Kong Bananza gives players much creative freedom through its destruction mechanics, which allow DK to smash through almost any surface using his mighty fists and use chunks of the landscape however he sees fit. This has led to gamers experimenting with Donkey Kong Bananza and coming up with creative self-imposed challenges and tricks.

Some of these challenges and tricks are naturally centered around the Banandium Gems, the crystal-like bananas scattered across the underground world of Donkey Kong Bananza. Players can find Banandium Gems in many different ways, be they by locating them while exploring or earning them as a reward for completing a certain challenge or boss fight. By smashing these gems and eating the fragments, DK can unlock skill points that can be used to upgrade his standard attacks and new Bananza transformations.

As helpful as Banandium Gems are in Donkey Kong Bananza, players don’t necessarily have to collect them to advance the game’s story. In fact, Twitter user Akfamilyhome recently shared that they managed to beat Donkey Kong Bananza on a New Game Plus playthrough without acquiring a single banana, and some other fans are already labeling this type of run as a “Potassium Deficiency%” playthrough.

Donkey Kong Bananza Can Be Cleared Without Bananas

Since Banandium Gems are used to unlock upgrades, trying to play through the entirety of Donkey Kong Bananza without them might be quite challenging. Akfamilyhome says that their run started out easy enough, with the player even uncovering some interesting ways to bypass certain sections of the mid-game. However, things became much more difficult during the endgame, where Akfamilyhome says that DK can die in just a couple of hits from enemies.

Completing a banana-free Donkey Kong Bananza run doesn’t unlock any special content or unique dialogue, unlike a run where Donkey Kong doesn’t learn all of his new Bananza transformations. As mentioned before, players have been discovering all kinds of alternate ways to play Donkey Kong Bananza since it launched on the Switch 2 earlier this month, and even more hidden tricks and secrets could be found as more people make it through the game. In the meantime, players are apparently free to beat Donkey Kong Bananza without any Banandium Gems, though DK himself would probably be less than thrilled at the idea of turning down his favorite snack.
