Players are treated to a wide expanse of punchy new weapons in DOOM: The Dark Ages, but some fans have recently discovered the existence of a strange, unused weapon that some theorize would have been the counterpart to the Chainshot. This curious gun in DOOM: The Dark Ages isn't the first unused weapon that fans have found in the legendary FPS franchise, and some speculate that it could actually play a part in The Dark Ages' future DLC.
Guns have always been a crucial component of DOOM's identity, and DOOM: The Dark Ages doesn't disappoint with its new additions to the Slayer's arsenal. Returning classics such as the plasma gun and the Slayer's iconic Super Shotgun are, of course, back in the mix, but traditional weapon archetypes such as the machine gun have been somewhat reimagined. In DOOM: The Dark Ages, players can wield the spike-launching Shredder as their first fully-automatic weapon, and can even get their hands on the more savage Skullcrusher later on, which spits shards of demon bone over a wide area at a high rate of fire. DOOM: The Dark Ages also arms players with a couple of powerful melee weapons, including the flail and devastatingly powerful Dreadmace.
Doom: The Dark Ages Leaning Into One Element Makes Perfect Sense
Doom: The Dark Ages contains the expected demon-slaughtering action, but it also takes a turn into some new territory that fits well in the series.
While most weapon classes in DOOM: The Dark Ages each contain two different guns — similarly to how each weapon in other DOOM titles features two swapable mods — the Reaver Chainshot appears to be an exception. While it has no official counterpart in the game currently, some fans believe that an unused weapon discovered thanks to console commands would have been the second Reaver weapon class. This strange weapon was recently shown off in an online clip shared by the user Naive_Lab_5189, and demonstrates the fully automatic weapon in action. Although fans will first need to utilize mods to take full advantage of DOOM: The Dark Ages' console commands, the "give all" command allows players to try the gun out themselves.
This Unused DOOM: The Dark Ages Weapon Could Be A Taste Of What's To Come
Complete with what seems like an incomplete model and animation set, this weapon seems like it could be related to the Chainshot due to it also using metallic spheres as ammunition. Additionally, based on its similar appearance and design, the weapon looks like it could have its origins within the Cosmic Realm, the weird eldritch dimension introduced in DOOM: The Dark Ages. Some fans have speculated that this unused gun could be an experimental feature that's set to play a role in the game's future campaign DLC.
There's currently no real information regarding DOOM: The Dark Ages' DLC besides the fact that it's on its way, but with the title being a prequel that's set during a critical time period in the DOOM universe, there are possibilities aplenty. With fans full of questions regarding the mysterious Cosmic Realm, it seems likely that the game's future DLC will have a focus on this new location somehow, and the addition of another creepy eldritch weapon would be perfectly fitting.
