Now, Bethesda has revealed Doom + Doom 2 during QuakeCon 2024, making the game instantly accessible on Steam and Microsoft’s popular subscription service Xbox Game Pass. This enhanced version of the first two Doom games has several quality-of-life updates, including cross-platform deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 players. It also supports up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS.

These enhancements don't represent everything added to the enhanced titles, though. The package also comes with several campaigns, including the Master Levels for Doom 2 and projects such as TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, No Rest for the Living, and the Romero-made Megawad Sigil. There will be a total of 43 Deathmatch levels, including 25 new maps, and players will be able to select community-made Doom mods via an in-game browser, making accessing them much easier. According to Bethesda, many mods from the last 25 years will be compatible with this new release due to the BOOM source engine.

The release of Doom + Doom 2 follows a recent trend of classic id Software games seeing modern remasters. For example, Quake Remastered was released in 2021, followed by the release of Quake 2 Remastered in 2023, also showing significant improvements to resolution and multiplayer capabilites.

Overall, Doom + Doom 2 is currently the best way to play the first games in the franchise, and it may help fans get their Doom fix while they wait for the release of Doom: The Dark Ages in 2025. Doom: The Dark Ages was originally revealed during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase with a trailer, and will be set in a prequel setting inspired by the Middle Ages. The game is expected to have new mechanics, such as a parry system.
