There's a lot going on at all times in DOOM: The Dark Ages, and the game regularly doles out new equipment, weapons, and upgrades to complicate things even further. The Slayer's shield is a huge part of the combat loop in The Dark Ages, and Shield Runes can be equipped to upgrade its capabilities.
Some players have noticed that the Runes page is completely locked at the start of DOOM: The Dark Ages, and since the game places a huge focus on collectibles and secrets, many players are wondering if they've missed a crucial upgrade somewhere in the opening chapters. There's no reason to worry, though, since Shield Runes are an unmissable upgrade in DOOM: The Dark Ages. The empty Runes page will be filled with multiple new abilities just a few hours into the main campaign.
DOOM The Dark Ages: Best Combat Shotgun Upgrades
Of the six total Combat Shotgun upgrades, DOOM The Dark Ages players should prioritize unlocking these best Shotgun mods first.
How to Get Runes in DOOM: The Dark Ages
Shield Runes are unlocked in chapter nine of the main story in DOOM: The Dark Ages. At the start of the level, the first Shield Rune upgrade will be unlocked automatically. There are multiple Runes to find throughout The Dark Ages, but Ground Fissure is the first one that players will get during the campaign.
These Shield Runes modify the shield's parry, delivering devastating attacks whenever the player parries a green projectile. Ground Fissure, for example, summons a fissure in front of the player that damages all demons in its path. Each Rune has upgrades that can be purchased with gold, too, so there are plenty of opportunities for players to tweak them in order to fit their playstyle.
All Shield Runes in DOOM: The Dark Ages
There are four total Shield Runes in DOOM: The Dark Ages. Each of them and the chapter in which they become available have been listed below:
- Ground Fissure (Chapter 9)
- Holy Swarm (Chapter 11)
- Auto Turret (Chapter 12)
- Heaven Splitter (Chapter 14)
Again, none of these upgrades are missable, so they'll be unlocked automatically as players progress through the campaign. Parrying is a huge part of DOOM: The Dark Ages — especially on higher difficulty levels — so investing gold into Shield Rune upgrades is a great way to improve survivability and even the odds against the demonic hordes.
