Doom: The Dark Ages was only announced in June 2024, but the latest entry into id Software’s long-running FPS franchise is already one of Microsoft’s most anticipated games in 2025.

To this end, Microsoft will showcase Doom: The Dark Ages in the next Developer Direct on January 23, 2025. Fans are expected to learn more about the game’s medieval setting, the origins of the Doom Slayer character, and the weapons gamers can use throughout the campaign. With a tentative 2025 release window, fans don’t know exactly when they’ll get their hands on Doom: The Dark Ages, although the release date may have slipped out ahead of an official announcement.

The French gaming outlet Gamekult claims that Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on May 15, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. The article, spotted by Insider Gaming, has now been removed, but it appears to have been based on an advanced look at the game. To build up hype for the game, id Software has been showing off Doom: The Dark Ages behind closed doors since Quakecon in August 2024, so it could be the article was accidentally published ahead of the official announcement.

This isn’t the first time a May release date for the first-person shooter has appeared. In December 2024, the leaker eXtas1s claimed that Doom: The Dark Ages will release in May and that Microsoft will confirm this date in January’s Developer Direct. With Gamekult’s article seemingly reaffirming the game's May release, some fans will no doubt be excited that the next Doom entry could arrive sooner rather than later.

Since its official unveiling in June 2024, there have only been official tidbits of information for the Doom Eternal prequel. Most recently, Nvidia gave fans a new tease of Doom: The Dark Ages in its latest ray-tracing presentation showcasing 12 new seconds of gameplay, albeit out of combat.

It is worth reiterating that the May 15 release date must be taken with a pinch of salt, as Microsoft hasn’t confirmed anything. Even without an official release date, Doom: The Dark Ages is part of a stellar 2025 lineup for Xbox. The title is part of a 2025 schedule that includes Microsoft’s first-party games including, Avowed, Fable, and South of Midnight.
