Id Software is now gearing up for the release of a new entry in the Doom universe, this time set in a new historical period (the Middle Ages), where players must battle waves of demons coming straight from hell and even face off against the very ruler of Hell. Now, the developer has revealed even more details for players to look forward to in Doom: The Dark Ages.

Some exclusive new limited-edition Doom: The Dark Ages products are reportedly in store for Xbox gamers ahead of the game's release this summer.

In a PlayStation blog post, Game Director Hugo Martin shared more details on the upcoming Doom: The Dark Ages, revealing the Cosmic Realm. This new world is a Lovecraftian dimension featuring “cyclopean architecture,” where players will encounter enemies like the Cosmic Baron, a huge creature equipped with twin blades for arms and the ability to block the player’s projectiles. Players will also have to face the Cacodemon, a “floating mass of telepathic terror” that uses tentacles to cripple its enemies.

Doom: The Dark Ages is the "Best Doom Game" Ever Made, According to Game Director

Martin also revealed a new Doom: The Dark Ages weapon, the Reaver Chainshot, which will be crucial for players when facing the new creatures roaming the Cosmic Realm. This deadly weapon can be used to take down a single enemy using a light attack or launch long-range melee strikes to target a group of foes. According to the director, the Reaver Chainshot is “unlike anything we’ve ever had in an id game.” He promised players that the game would feature bigger scenarios, more chaos, a higher number of enemies, and an enhanced experience compared to previous entries in the Doom franchise. “The Dark Ages is the best Doom game we’ve ever made,” Martin stated.

The developer also emphasized the crucial role of idTech 8, which allows the game to run at a steady 60fps on PlayStation, promising players that the game will play exactly as it looks in the trailer. While players buckle up to face the very ruler of Hell and its foes in Doom: The Dark Ages, the director promises this entry to be “the biggest and most complete” ever released in the franchise.
