Summary

  • DOOM: The Dark Ages offers a classic Doomguy face sprite option for the HUD.
  • Players can customize other gameplay details like enemy orb speed and shield saw parry timing.
  • The game launches on May 15 for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, with early access for Premium Edition buyers.

Doom: The Dark Ages will give players the option to use the classic Doomguy face sprite in between its HUD's health and shield meters. A prequel to 2016's Doom reboot and Doom Eternal, Doom: The Dark Ages is looking to switch things up for players in a major way with its dark medieval setting and a selection of gruesome melee weapons at the Doom Slayer's disposal. Developer id Software has made it clear in its many showings of the game that The Dark Ages has ditched the speed and verticality of Eternal for a slower, tankier, more hard-hitting gameplay style that aims to feel more like the original Doom games.

In the lead-up to Doom: The Dark Ages' release, id Software unveiled a number of gameplay customization options players will be able to make use of. The Dark Ages will allow players to choose a difficulty as with nearly any other game, but id Software has even finer gameplay details that are able to be tweaked as well. Players will have control over the speed of the bullet hell-like orbs enemies will be spewing, as well as the parry timing of the Doom Slayer's new throwable shield saw melee weapon.

DOOM: The Dark Ages Fan Shares Custom Shield Saw Replica Ahead of The Game's Release

With the launch of DOOM: The Dark Ages just around the corner, one talented fan creates an amazing custom replica of the Slayer's shield saw.

It seems that, along with all these impressive gameplay options, id Software is implementing another setting for longtime fans of the famous FPS franchise. On Twitter, well-known Xbox insider and Doom: The Dark Ages reviewer Colt Eastwood revealed that during his time playing Doom: The Dark Ages for his review, he noticed a setting that lets players apply the classic 2D Doomguy face sprite in the heads-up-display instead of the default blank blue holographic face. Eastwood shared two screenshots of the feature, showing that Doomguy's facial expressions even react based on how much health and shield players have left, just like in the original games.

Players Can Use Classic Doomguy HUD Face in Doom: The Dark Ages

Neither the 2016 Doom reboot nor Doom Eternal featured any sort of reactionary face embedded in their HUDs, so when The Dark Ages' gameplay was revealed, it was a big deal when fans spotted the blue default face sitting at the bottom of the HUD between the health and shield meters. However, with Doom: The Dark Ages serving as a prequel, seemingly going back to the Doom Slayer's origins, it's fitting that the classic Doomguy face sprite is available to use in-game. This is even more true when considering how The Dark Ages' gameplay more closely resembles the original Doom games. Longtime fans of the series may feel right at home, especially with the classic Slayer face available in the game's settings.

The wait for Doom: The Dark Ages is almost over, as it releases later this week on May 15. The game is coming to Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, and will be available to download via Xbox Game Pass on day one. Additionally, early-bird gamers who've purchased the game's Premium Edition will be able to start slaying starting today, May 12.
