Doritos has released Doritos Silent, a novelty noise cancellation software aimed at gamers who like to snack while they play. The popular brand of triangle-shaped tortilla chips has long been a part of gaming culture, with Doritos having collaborated with Xbox and Rockstar two years in a row, as well as PlayStation and Call of Duty in the past. It’s a well-established stereotype, fully based in truth, that many gamers like to have plenty of snacks on hand when settling in for a long play session.
In one well-known promotion several years ago, Overwatch’s D.Va relaxed with a bag of Doritos and a Mountain Dew while hearthing in Heroes of the Storm. She does much the same during her “Game On” Legendary emote in Overwatch. For gamers in real life, however, snacking while playing can be a headache for other players who have to listen to the unsavory noise in the mic. Muting might be a solution, but not everybody remembers to do that, and a lot of people snack at times when they still need to communicate with teammates.
With that in mind, Doritos recently launched its “crunch cancellation” software called Doritos Silent. While it might seem like a joke, the software is very real and can be downloaded from Doritos’ website. Currently only available on PC, the tech is powered by AI that has been trained to recognize over 5,000 different crunching sounds and filter them out while still allowing players to chat with their squad.
Much like other noise cancellation software, Doritos Silent claims to effectively silence the sound of crunching so that party members aren’t distracted or annoyed by the noise in the mic. Of course, though trained on Doritos crunches specifically, the software may also work with other crunchy snacks like Cheetos or maybe carrot sticks.
Understandably, a number of PC gamers were intrigued by this crunch cancellation software and have already checked out how effective it is. While Doritos Silent does eliminate much of the crunch noise, some still slips through, and the overall audio quality is diminished as well. The software seems to function as a kind of noise gate that noticeably dampens all sounds and cuts it off entirely below a certain threshold. However, because the AI behind the technology was trained specifically using the sound of Doritos being eaten, it may be more effective at canceling out those particular sounds than run-of-the-mill noise gates or noise reduction software.
