Dragon Age: Origins is seeing a massive boost in player numbers on Steam following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. First released in 2009, Dragon Age: Origins is the first game in the series and sets the stage for BioWare's long-running dark fantasy franchise.
As Dragon Age: The Veilguard continues to welcome fans back to the world of Thedas, longtime players have been swept up in nostalgia for past entries, with many sharing their favorite bits of lore or character quotes across social media in recent weeks. Those not familiar with BioWare's popular fantasy titles are likely also being influenced by the many positive reviews for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, eager to start their journey at the very beginning with Dragon Age: Origins, a game still treasured by RPG fans over 15 years after its release.
According to SteamDB, as spotted by TheGamer, Dragon Age: Origins has seen a 66 percent spike in players following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard on October 31, boasting a peak concurrent player count of 2,642. This wasn't the only game in the series to report a recent boost, as the much-maligned Dragon Age 2 reached its all-time concurrent player count record of 1,421 in June 2024. Dragon Age: Inquisition also reached its all-time concurrent player count record of 4,964 in June, soon after the first trailer for The Veilguard was revealed.
Dragon Age: Origins Sees 76 Percent Player Spike on Steam
Many aspects of Origins still hold up in 2024, from the game's compelling characters to its engaging story and stunning score. However, a Dragon Age: Origins remaster has been on many fan's wishlists for years, with former BioWare developer and lead Dragon Age writer David Gaider also voicing his support for such a project in the future. Despite facing criticism for its reused assets and small scale upon release in 2011, Dragon Age 2 has since gone on to become a fan favorite, with its characters continuing to be a hit with players. The sequel's developers were notoriously forced to crunch while working on the game, and many players have lamented what it could have looked like if the studio was given more time.
Reaching over 85,000 concurrent players on Steam during its first weekend, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has become one of EA's largest single-player PC launches to date. Unfortunately, while player response to the fourth entry in the series has been largely positive, BioWare says that The Veilguard will have no post-launch DLC as the team shifts its focus to the next Mass Effect title. Fans eager for the next game in the sci-fi series may have to wait a while, as recent rumors point to a 2029 release.
