A new series of four gameplay videos for Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been released, showcasing nearly 11 minutes of complex and strategically intensive combat in the game. Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be the fourth mainline installment in the franchise, and its recent combat reveals show a lot of new features on the way.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is scheduled for release on October 31, and new information about the upcoming action RPG has been pouring forth since the release date announcement. The next game in the series will see players take on the role of the Rook and join together with an almost entirely-new cast of companions.

The new series of gameplay videos was released on Dragon Age's official YouTube channel on August 23, with about six hours separating the first upload from the last, and they detail some of the game's higher-level combat systems, as The Veilguard will feature more action-based combat than previous Dragon Age entries. These new changes include massive class-specific skill trees, the addition of runes to boost the powers of certain skills and abilities, and a targeting function that reveals enemy types' vulnerabilities and resistances. Players will also be able to utilize primers and detonators to set up massive damage-dealing combos. The videos all center on building an effective Warrior Rook, though they include a glimpse into the Rogue and Mage mechanics by way of the player synergizing with companions.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Shows Off New Combat Mechanics

Although the fourth entry's combat systems include a lot of new features, there will be plenty of familiar elements for longtime Dragon Age players, such as the option for sword-and-shield or two-handed builds for Warriors. And despite the shift away from the series' established isometric strategy format, the videos show how the game still allows for issuing commands to companions in The Veilguard, such as having Lucanis cast a crowd control knockdown spell when the Rook is surrounded. The new gameplay seems to be getting an overwhelmingly positive response in the comment section, with viewers praising the fluid-looking combat and the depth of customization.

While all four videos, as well as a fifth that shows the other four back-to-back, can be viewed via a link, none appear under the game's main YouTube home, videos, or playlists tabs. That hasn't stopped fans from accessing them, however, with the video combining parts 1-4 having just under 10,000 views at the time of this writing. However, it doesn't appear as though the videos are intended to be hidden, as developers had already stated they would be releasing previews of high-level combat this week. The rest of August should be full of reveals for Dragon Age: The Veilguard too, with a Companion Week scheduled to start on August 26 and a developer Q&A session planned for Discord on August 30. Additionally, the new set of videos promise that another deep-dive into the progression system is on the way.
