Summary
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard won't have post-launch DLC.
- BioWare plans to shift focus to the upcoming Mass Effect game.
- The Veilguard has positive reviews with action-packed combat and a well-received cast.
BioWare recently revealed that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will not have any post-launch DLC. Despite Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s success, BioWare wants to focus on its future projects, following a different path than the one the studio took after Dragon Age: Inquisition’s launch.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released on October 31 after around nine years of development. The previous game in the franchise, Dragon Age: Inquisition, was launched in 2014, and it had three DLCs: Jaws of Hakkon, The Descent, and Trespassper.
Mass Effect 4 Not Adopting Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Art Style is a Double-Edged Sword
Dragon Age: The Veilguard took a big leap with its art style, and it will be interesting to see how Mass Effect 4's graphics contrast it.
BioWare’s creative director John Epler recently revealed to Rolling Stone that there are no plans to develop DLC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. As soon as the new Dragon Age is fully patched, the studio’s entire focus will shift to the development of the upcoming Mass Effect game. While this is disappointing news for fans who were excited to see more content in the Dragon Age universe, at least it means that The Veilguard will not suffer from the same issues as Inquisition did. Back in 2015, Dragon Age: Inquisition was greatly criticized for having the “true” ending of its story set in the “Trespasser” DLC.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Will Not Have DLC
During the same interview, Epler also addressed the possibility of releasing a Dragon Age collection. According to the creative director, it’s not as easy to remaster all Dragon Age games as it was with Mass Effect. The entire Mass Effect trilogy was made with Unreal Engine, while Dragon Age: Origins used the Eclipse engine, and Dragon Age 2 using the Frostbite engine. While Epler expressed interest in the classic games, it does not seem probable that a collection will ever come out.
While it won’t have any DLC, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been receiving positive reviews from most critics. The game currently holds an average score of 82 on OpenCritic, with most reviewers praising its action-paced combat and the cast.
Players have also been positively reviewing Dragon Age: The Veilguard and their impressions vary from somewhat to overwhelmingly positive. On Steam, for example, the title has Mostly Positive reviews, with 79% of all players liking the game. The impressions on consoles are even more positive, with the action RPG averaging 4.4 stars on the Xbox Store, and 4.58 stars on the PlayStation Store. While it’s still too early to know how well The Veilguard is faring financially, it’s at least possible to acknowledge that it’s doing much better than Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem critically.
