Vegeta has always been one of the strongest characters in Dragon Ball history. In the Saiyan Saga, Vegeta was so powerful, Goku needed help from Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe just to survive – even then, no one was actually able to kill Vegeta. In the Frieza Saga, Vegeta spends most of the arc gaining Zenkai boosts that help him keep pace with Goku up until the final battle with Frieza. As of Dragon Ball Super, Vegeta is not only stronger than Goku, he's the second-strongest hero in the series after Gohan.

The 10 Strongest Dragon Ball Z Transformations, Ranked

Anime transformations as we know them wouldn't exist without Dragon Ball Z, and these are the absolute strongest forms in DBZ.

Vegeta doesn't have as many transformations as Goku, but that's simply because he doesn't need them. Between regular Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan Blue, and Ultra Ego, Vegeta knows how to make the most of his forms and refine them in ways his fellow Saiyans would never think of. Sporting a higher base Power Level than Goku, Vegeta's transformations often help him catch up to his rival, if not surpass him, in record time.

7 Super Saiyan Vegeta Was Briefly Stronger Than Super Saiyan Goku in the Cell Saga

When Super Saiyan Vegeta first debuts in Dragon Ball Z, he's actually stronger than Super Saiyan Goku. During the three-year gap between the Frieza and Cell Sagas, Vegeta trains harder than Goku and ends up unlocking a slightly stronger version of Super Saiyan. Where Goku wasn't able to beat Android 19 before his Heart Virus kicked in, Super Saiyan Vegeta effortlessly destroys 19 and could have killed Dr. Gero.

Android 18 quickly puts Vegeta in his place, but by training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for a year with Future Trunks, Vegeta refines his version of Super Saiyan into Super Saiyan Grade 2: a variant of the form with a considerably higher Power Level at the expense of slightly worse stamina. Dubbing himself Super Vegeta, Super Saiyan Grade 2 Vegeta was so powerful, he could have easily killed Semi-Perfect Cell with no trouble. Unfortunately, Vegeta's pride gets in the way and he lets Cell absorb Android 18 to become Perfect.

6 Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta Was Able to Make Beerus Bleed

Vegeta didn't unlock Super Saiyan 2 until he let Babidi possess him in the Majin Buu Saga and turn him Majin. That was enough to bring Super Saiyan 2 Majin Vegeta on par with Super Saiyan 2 Goku, making them both slightly stronger than Super Saiyan 2 Gohan at the time. Vegeta doesn't get any stronger over the course of the Buu arc, but he does remain strong enough to technically earn Dragon Ball Z's final battle against Kid Buu.

The Official 10 Strongest Dragon Ball Super Forms, Ranked

Dragon Ball Super's power scaling means that the series' forms are leagues stronger than anything seen in Dragon Ball Z, & are only getting stronger.

While Goku is charging up his Spirit Bomb, Vegeta offers to stall Kid Buu even though he has no chance of winning. Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta is clearly outclassed in every respect, but he puts up an incredible fight and tanks hit after hit as he keeps Kid Buu's attention away from Goku. SSJ2 Vegeta was never going to be able to win, but the fact he's able to survive at all is in and of itself incredibly impressive. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta's rage boost makes him so strong, even Master Roshi acknowledges that Vegeta has surpassed Super Saiyan 3 Goku.

5 Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta is Stronger Than Super Saiyan 3 Goku

Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta charging an attack in Dragon Ball DAIMA

Super Saiyan 3 was Goku's strongest form in Dragon Ball Z, but also his worst. Because Goku unlocked Super Saiyan 3 in the afterlife, he never experienced any of the transformation's negative side effects: most notably, SSJ3's intense Ki drain. During the final battle with Kid Buu, Goku's body simply cannot keep up with Super Saiyan 3's raw power and drains Ki faster than he can charge, leaving him in his base form for the rest of the final battle.

In Dragon Ball DAIMA, Vegeta reveals that he unlocked Super Saiyan 3 by training secretly. That in itself is a massive achievement, since Goku needed a dead body to access the form and Gotenks could only turn SSJ3 because he's a fusion. Even more impressive is the fact that Super Saiyan 3 Vegeta seemingly suffers from no Ki drain. Both Mini Vegeta and Adult Vegeta can use Super Saiyan 3 in longer bursts than Goku, and this is despite having signicnatly less time to master SSJ3 compared to Goku.

4 Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta Brought The Prince of All Saiyans Up to Goku's Level With Zero Training

Super Saiyan 4 Vegeta in Dragon Ball GT

With the exception of being possessed by Baby, Vegeta spends all of Dragon Ball GT lagging behind Goku. It's not until the end of the Shadow Dragon Saga when Vegeta finally levels the playing field. With help from Bulma, Vegeta is injected with enough Blutz Waves to unlock Super Saiyan 4. While Vegeta would normally be against unlocking a new form through anything but his own hard work, the fact Vegeta lets Bulma help him turn SSJ4 speaks to his character development.

Vegeta in Dragon Ball GT is the most humbled version of the character. He's a genuine hero who's overcome his ego, and is willing to put his pride on the line if it means helping Goku and saving the world. Vegeta's even the one to propose fusing into Gogeta during the final battle with Omega Shenron. Notably, Vegeta is so strong as is, the Blutz Waves raise his Power Level to be on par with Super Saiyan 4 Goku's with next to no training.

3 Super Saiyan God Vegeta Unlocked the Form All on His Own – Unlike Goku

Super Saiyan God Vegeta in Dragon Ball Super Broly

Super Saiyan God is the only transformation Goku didn't unlock through hard work or an emotional breakthrough. In Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Goku expresses his disappointment to Beerus that he needed to rely on the God Ritual in order to turn into a Super Saiyan God. This makes it all the more impressive when Vegeta unlocks Super Saiyan God all on his own. It's never revealed when or how Vegeta first turned SSG, but it's clear he did not use the God Ritual.

7 Dragon Ball Super Characters Stronger Than Ultra Ego Vegeta

Ultra Ego Vegeta may be stronger than Ultra Instinct Goku (for now), but he's hardly the strongest character in Dragon Ball Super.

In the manga, Vegeta uses Super Saiyan God in the same way Goku used Kaioken against Frieza, conserving as much God Ki as possible during his fight with Goku Black. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Vegeta debuts Super Saiyan God in the anime and comes extremely close to killing Broly before Goku takes his turn at fighting the Legendary Super Saiyan.

2 Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta is Objectively Better Than Super Saiyan Blue Goku

When it comes down to it, Vegeta is the strongest Super Saiyan Blue in Dragon Ball Super. By the Goku Black Saga, Vegeta has trained his version of Super Saiyan Blue so much, his Power Level is on par with Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken Goku – which is a massive feat considering Goku is stacking a literal multiplier on top of his Super Saiyan Blue. In the Tournament of Power, Vegeta's Super Saiyan Blue mutates into Super Saiyan Blue Evolution, a super-powerful version of the form that's about as strong as Ultra Instinct Sign, a literal angel technique.

In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103, Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta is so powerful, he's able to spar with Gohan Beast. This is especially notable since Gohan Beast was able to knock Goku out of Ultra Instinct during their fight, but Vegeta was strong enough to rely on just SSB during the Saiyan battle royale. In terms of Power Level and feats, Super Saiyan Blue Goku has absolutely nothing on Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta.

1 Ultra Ego Vegeta Can Beat Ultra Instinct Goku – For Now

vegeta ultra ego dragon ball

At the end of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Vegeta finally achieved one of his lifelong dreams: beating Goku in a fair & square fight. In the Saiyan Saga, Vegeta was defeated by a combined effort from Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe, so he couldn't finish his one on one duel with Goku (he also had to turn into a Great Ape, which to Vegeta, was tantamount to losing). In the Majin Buu Saga, Vegeta knocks Super Saiyan 2 Goku out with a cheap shot, and then has his pride wounded when he learns Goku could have turned Super Saiyan 3 at anytime to end the fight.

In Super Hero, Vegeta beats Goku with his own strength and skills. To be fair, this was a fight in their base form with no transformations, but since Vegeta's base Power Level is higher than Goku's, it stands to reason Ultra Ego Vegeta is stronger than Ultra Instinct Goku. Goku will continue refining Ultra Instinct and eventually surpass Vegeta, but for now, Ultra Ego Vegeta is the strongest form. Ultra Ego gets more powerful the longer its user fights and the more damage they take. While Ultra Ego Vegeta currently has no wins under his belt, he already has a leg over Goku in terms of raw Power Level. The only transformations currently stronger than Ultra Ego Vegeta are Gohan Beast and Black Frieza.
