Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima, Episode 13, "Surprise", now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Dragon Ball Daima has Goku and the Z Fighters exploring the ins and outs of the previously obscure Demon Realm, and one of their most recent encounters is with some of the Demon Realm's strongest beings. Previously, viewers had been led to believe that the Demon Realm's most powerful would be the Tamagami, the Kraken, or Marba's newest creation, Majin Duu. But no, the most dangerous creatures in the Demon Realm apparently belong to the Planets Mega and Giga, and are fittingly called the Megaths and Gigaths.
Remember that Dragon Ball Daima takes place between Dragon Ball Z and Super, so the strongest opponent the Z Fighters had to face before this series is Majin Buu. But that might change now that everyone knows the Megaths and Gigaths are out there.
Dragon Ball DAIMA: How Does Vegeta's Super Saiyan 3 Differ From Goku's?
Dragon Ball DAIMA gave Vegeta a transformation that has eluded him for decades. Finally, he has achieved SSJ3, but how is it different from Goku's?
Who Are the Megaths?
The Demon Realm's Second-Strongest Race
The Megaths are a race of beings who inhabit the planet Mega in the Second Demon World. They are orange-skinned giant humanoids with the signature Demon Realm pointy ears. It's not just the Megaths who are gigantic though, as everything that originates from Mega is huge. To put things into perspective, Goku and his friends are literally smaller than Planet Mega's blades of grass.
How Powerful Are the Megaths?
The Megaths are powerful enough that it's implied they could have beaten the Demon King and taken his place as ruler of the Demon Realm. Neva even stated that the Demon King and the Gendarmerie never go to Mega for fear of the Megaths. The only reason the Megaths, and presumably the Gigaths, haven't taken over is that they're a laid-back race who don't really care for the whole world-domination thing, according to Shin.
"The Megaths are a laid-back race and aren't interested in such things" - Supreme Kai Shin on why the Megaths don't take over the Demon Realm
However, it is admittedly hard to judge their full power since Daima only shows a child member of the Megath race. And from what they showed, it seemed like Goku and the others could have beaten the child if they truly wanted to. The Z Fighters weren't giving their all in that fight because they were up against an innocent kid, his dog, and some hamsters. They weren't fighting to hurt or kill, but rather just to protect themselves and their ship.
However, adult Megaths are powerful enough to hunt Kraken for food. It apparently happens commonly enough that Kraken delicacies are sold in stores on Mega. Goku mentioned in Dragon Ball Daima episode 10, "Ocean", that he and his kid-ified companions aren't enough to beat a Kraken, which means that the average Megath adult would be stronger than Goku and the Tamagami.
The Megaths May Be a Callback to Another Giant Race
Dragon Ball Daima is sprinkled with references and callbacks to people and events from previous Dragon Ball series, and the Megaths might be one of them. Fans who've watched Dragon Ball GT might recall a certain giant who got a Black Star Dragon Ball stuck in his tooth in episode 6, "Like Pulling Teeth". They're both bald, giant orange humanoids with pointy ears. And if you think it's weird for them to add a reference to such an obscure character, well, the giant from GT was actually one of the few things Akira Toriyama designed for the series, so it's nice to see Daima paying homage to it.
Who Are the Gigaths?
The Strongest Race in the Demon Realm
The Gigaths are another race within the Demon Realm that lives on a planet called Giga, but it's unknown if it's also inside the Second Demon World or in another part of the Demon Realm. Neva said that the Gigaths are even bigger than the Megaths, and implied that they are much more powerful. These beings could have probably given Majin Buu a run for his money. Daima didn't reveal what Gigaths look like, but if their name is anything to go by, then they must be absolutely ginormous. For those that know their measurements, digital data sizes, and electricity generation/transmission, "mega" means "million", while "giga" means "billion". So, if you want to be super literal with the names, Gigaths may be 1,000 times bigger than the average Megath.
Of course, there's also a chance that the name is just a means to convey that the Gigaths are indeed larger and more fearsome. Or maybe it indicates that they're 1,000 times stronger than the Megaths instead? Knowing Dragon Ball and its wacky power scaling, something like that could be the case.
Would Gigaths Be the Biggest Living Things in Dragon Ball?
No, not even if you want to be literal and think the Gigaths are 1,000 times bigger than the Megaths. That title would still belong to Super Shenron from Dragon Ball Super. The Super Dragon Ball's golden Eternal Dragon can grow large enough to dwarf entire galaxies. So, even if you were to be incredibly generous and say a Gigath is as big as an Earth-sized planet, they wouldn't even come close to being the largest organisms in the Dragon Ball franchise.
