In the entirety of the Dragon Ball franchise, there are few things that evoke as much criticism as the word 'potential'. This is a series completely about fighting and the pursuit of even greater power, so it makes sense that there is a lot of disparity when it comes to the strength of certain characters. However, to keep up, some just have an easier time getting stronger than others.

The most common examples of this are Gohan and Broly, who have been able to close the gap in power between themselves and Goku and Vegeta in an instant due to the incredible potential they hold within themselves. However, despite their undeniable power, they aren't the ones with the greatest potential in all of Dragon Ball, as that title belongs to the greatest villain of the franchise, so let's take a look at why this is.

Granolah the Survivor Saga

As central a concept as potential is to the overall story of Dragon Ball, it has started to meet a lot more criticism from fans over the years. The main reason for this is that many think it to be a lazy and contrived way to make characters vastly stronger in a short amount of time without having them put the hard work in. They believe that such a caveat makes all the struggle and training that Goku and Vegeta go through meaningless.

Following the close of the Cell Saga, Gohan had largely taken a significant step back from fighting in order to focus on the other things in his life, which naturally meant that he had gotten far weaker since then. However, at random points, he has simply gotten angrier and managed to unlock a form stronger than any other without training even a little bit for it, which is something fans generally don't like. The same is true with Broly, since he managed to surpass Super Saiyan Blue-level in his first-ever serious fight.

However, as impressive as these feats are for these Saiyans, Frieza takes the cake as the character with the greatest potential of them all. This was explained in the Resurrection F film, where he stated that all the power that he ever garnered was due to his potential alone, since he never really trained to hone his strength, despite which he became one of Universe 7's strongest beings. Eventually, upon his resurrection, he decided to finally train in order to close the gap between him and Goku.

With only 4 months of training, Frieza managed to unlock his incredible Golden Frieza transformation, which was strong enough to contend with Super Saiyan Blue, showing just how much strength the Galactic Tyrant truly has in store. Though he did end up losing against Goku and Vegeta, it wasn't a failing of the form's strength; it was only because he never let the transformation settle in, so he could never use it to its full capacity.

Meet Black Frieza! Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I'll have you know.

This all changed around the Tournament of Power arc, where Frieza showed that he had actually mastered his Golden form and used it very well. However, nothing would give a greater testament to his insane potential than the end of the Granolah arc, where the villain made his long-awaited return to the series, sporting his terrifying Black Frieza state. Upon coming across a Hyperbolic Time Chamber on a world that he had conquered, Frieza got in 10 years' worth of training, which not only unlocked the form, but also allowed the villain to master it.

At the current moment, Black Frieza is the closest a mortal has ever come to matching Beerus in strength, with many fans even being convinced that it surpasses the Destroyer. The best reason for this was how he was able to knock out Goku and Vegeta while they were in their most powerful Divine states, showing that despite owning the powers of the Angels and Destroyer Gods, they were still nothing compared to the Galactic Tyrant.

  • Black Frieza is far beyond the heroes right now.

It's evident that, at the current moment, the heroes don't stand a chance against Black Frieza, even with each of them having unlocked their ultimate transformations. The reason for this is that Frieza's incredible and unmatched potential has finally been realized in the strongest transformation we have seen yet, so even Ultra Instinct Goku or Beast Gohan simply can't even hope to take on the villain on their own.

In truth, it seems that the only way to defeat the Galactic Tyrant in his strongest form is for everyone to work together to overwhelm him at once, since that remains their best hope of doing so. Conversely, many fans believe that Goku and Vegeta may be able to pull off a victory against their greatest foe through fusion, since both Gogeta and Vegito add their powers and then further multiply them greatly. This may be the only way to reach Black Frieza's power.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
