For many, the Granolah arc goes down as the best in all of Dragon Ball Super. This is for a number of reasons, such as some of the greatest character moments and battles that have ever been shown before in the franchise as a whole, which all culminate in the return of the best villain in the story. However, it's safe to say that the best part about the entire arc were the characters themselves.

In a move that is different from how most Dragon Ball arcs tend to play out, the battles and combat largely took a backseat to greater world-building and character moments. Each of the central figures in the Granolah arc was incredible to see and served the story exceptionally well, though not equally. So, in this article, let's go over the main characters of this arc and see who was the most important of them all.

Black Frieza Returned In The End As The Greater Overall Antagonist

Dragon Ball's Best Villain

Arc Debut

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 87, "The Universe's Strongest Appears"

Strongest Form

Black Frieza

  • Black Frieza is the strongest villain in the history of the franchise.

Frieza may have only made his debut at the end of the arc, but his presence had been felt since the very beginning. When Elec announced his plan, it was revealed that the Heeters' true goal was to make Gas the strongest in the universe in order to eventually defeat Frieza, not knowing that the Frost Demon had become stronger than ever before. Due to Frieza being the main reason why the Heeters even began whatever mission they had, he is one of the most important characters in the arc, since everything eventually led up to him.

Meet Black Frieza! Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I'll have you know.

Bardock Made A Surprise Appearance, Which Was Amazing To See

The Father of Goku

Arc Debut

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 77, "Bardock, The Father of Goku"

Strongest Form

Great Ape

  • Bardock made his manga debut in this arc.

There are a few side characters in Dragon Ball who are as beloved as Bardock. In this arc, he was shown to have taken part in the Saiyan invasion of Planet Cereal at the behest of Frieza, where he saw Granolah and his mother and decided to protect them. Because of this, he came at direct odds with Gas, where he defeated the Heeter in a close fight which stayed with the villain for the rest of his life. Due to his role in saving Granolah's life and the impact he had on both Gas and Goku later on in the arc, Bardock remains one of its most important characters.

You're ignorant, and that's my fault? Nah.

The Heeters Were The Central Antagonists Of The Entire Granolah Arc

The Sneaky Family

Arc Debut

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 68, "Granolah the Survivor"

Strongest Character

Gas

  • The Heeters were the main villains of the arc.

In one of the most refreshing takes in Dragon Ball, the Heeters acted more as conniving and sneaky main villains than outright brutes that the heroes must fight. Elec, the leader, proved to be one of the most shrewd characters ever introduced in the series, as his plan was always to take down Frieza no matter what, even if it meant giving up the life of his own brother to do so. Through the wish made with the Cerealian Dragon Balls, Gas managed to become the strongest in the universe briefly, though he was slowly dying the whole time.

We'll have more business opportunities than ever with Frieza's notorious forces under our thumb.

Goku Was An Incredibly Important And Powerful Warrior In This Arc

The Main Character

Arc Debut

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 68, "Granolah the Survivor"

Strongest Form

True Ultra Instinct

  • Goku took more of a background role here than he usually does.

Goku has almost always been the central focus of the many story arcs of the franchise. This time, however, he didn't have as singular of a role as he usually does, since he was more concerned with fighting and growing stronger than anything else. However, eventually, it was through his understanding of Ultra Instinct, which he mixed with his Saiyan powers, that led to his strongest form at the time, True Ultra Instinct, which he used alongside Vegeta and Granolah to defeat the main villains of the story.

In this form, I can put my emotions to work for me. And believe me, my heart's not calm now!

Granolah Was The Titular Character Of The Arc And A Great Addition

The Survivor

Arc Debut

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 67, "Happy Endings... And Then..."

Strongest Form

Two Red Eyes

  • Granolah was the central focus of the arc.

Granolah's entire life had been defined by his burning hatred of the Saiyans for their invasion. Because of this, it drove him to make the wish to become the universe's strongest being, with which he was able to defeat Goku and almost kill Vegeta, though doing the latter would kill him as well. Ultimately, he found that the real villains were the Heeters and Frieza and that his blind vengeance against the Saiyans was detrimental, leading him to side with the heroes after undergoing a tremendous amount of growth. Everything in this arc revolved around him.

That piece of garbage, Frieza, will die by my hand. I will have my revenge.

Vegeta Was The Most Important Character In The Entire Granolah Arc

The Prince of Saiyans

Arc Debut

Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 68, "Granolah the Survivor"

Strongest Form

Ultra Ego

  • Vegeta had the most growth this arc.

Generally speaking, Vegeta is the most layered and best character in the series, according to most. However, in this arc, his character writing was at its greatest, since it showed the Prince dealing with the legacy of the race he has always proudly portrayed himself as belonging to, as well as showing him swallow his pride in order to give Granolah the chance to fight and defeat Gas. Not only this, but the Granolah arc also showed Vegeta entering the upper echelons of power in the universe through his own means by attaining Ultra Ego instead of following Goku's Ultra Instinct, which is how it has always been. This proved to be one of the best decisions for the character.

Your revenge must be satisfied, no? So settle this grudge with your own strength!
