Summary

  • Power scaling is likely to skyrocket with new transformations and power-ups that the series may introduce.
  • There will be a much greater focus on all Z-Fighters, suggesting more character development.
  • Toyotarou's unique storytelling may bring a fresh take to Dragon Ball Super.

It's safe to say that Dragon Ball Super's return is perhaps the most awaited in the entire anime industry. Ever since the passing of Akira Toriyama in March 2024, the manga went on an indefinite hiatus, coming as a huge blow to fans as it was the only thing in the franchise that was still ongoing since the anime's last episode aired in 2017 with a promise of a return, but at an unspecified date that still hasn't been met.

Although fans used every piece of news as an indication to hype the return of Dragon Ball Super's manga, there has been nothing concrete about it. However, many are convinced that it is imminent due to Toyotarou's scheduled appearance at the Japan Expo in Paris on the 6th of July, so here's what they can expect once the manga returns and the story of Goku and the Z-Fighters continues.

  • Power scaling will likely go through the roof.

It's no secret that Dragon Ball is a series that places an incredible amount of importance on fighting and the need to get stronger. In the short span of its 103 chapters, the Super manga introduced a plethora of new transformations for almost all of its characters since the threats they went up against were so strong that they needed to unlock them. This has pros and cons, as many believe that too many transformations lead to the story being too repetitive, as well as the fact that none of these forms have as lasting of an impact.

Power comes in response to a need, not a desire. You have to create that need.

On the other hand, through these means, characters grow stronger in new and exciting ways that keep the story engaging, and once it does return, such power scaling is sure to go through the roof. Even small increments in power make all the difference, and for the heroes to face off against powerhouses like Black Frieza, fans can definitely expect to see new and exciting transformations that are far stronger than any that have come before them.

A Chance For All The Heroes To Shine Equally

A Focus On The Group

  • Chapter 103 suggests that there will be a greater focus on every Z-Fighter.

Ever since the original Dragon Ball series aired, Goku has undoubtedly been the protagonist. However, as the franchise evolved and other characters came in, this slightly changed to put more of an emphasis on side characters than before. Now, the story of Super has Goku and Vegeta as the deuteragonists, and going forward, the latest chapter in the current day, Chapter 103, suggests that the future may expand this as well.

You're better than me, Kakarot. You are the best.

With this chapter's release, and subsequent promotional material for the series, it was made evident that Goku will no longer be the sole focus of the story, with Vegeta, Gohan, Broly, and Piccolo joining him as the five main protectors of Universe 7. As the threats will naturally grow larger and the stakes will be greater than ever before, it will be a breath of fresh air to have multiple main characters that are all around the same level of power, which will give their arcs a lot more development as well.

A Different Style Of Dragon Ball From What We Are Used To

Toyotarou's Version Of The Story

  • Toyotarou's approach may be different from what we know.

The biggest thing regarding the resumption of Dragon Ball Super has to be that it will be quite different from what fans have come to know of the franchise. Although Toyotarou was the primary artist for Super, Akira Toriyama was still the lead writer behind all the events that took place in its story, which is quite an important distinction to make since the new series will solely have Toyotarou as its driving force. This could mean that the approach that he takes to it may be drastically different from what fans have come to know about Dragon Ball.

I drew manga because I wanted to be praised by Toriyama-sensei, it was everything to me.

Of course, at the current moment, it's far too early to say whether this will be a good or a bad thing since this would be his first undertaking like this. However, fans are still excited to see his take on it as many have often cited the Dragon Ball story as being too basic and repetitive at times, so perhaps Toyotarou's unique brand of storytelling will be exactly what the franchise needs. It's safe to say that if Toriyama himself had faith in Toyotarou as his successor, fans should rest easy knowing that Dragon Ball is in good hands.

Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
