Despite being nearly eight months old and with some players logging hundreds of hours into playing Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, some players are still finding its distinctive beam clash mechanic rather confusing. Released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero excited players by taking up the mantle of the beloved Dragon Ball Budokai series and bringing it to modern platforms.

By almost all accounts, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero! Has been a massive success so far for publisher Bandai Namco and developer Spike Chunsoft. The game has broken major sales records and become the fastest-selling Dragon Ball game to date. That being said, despite the relative accessibility of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero combat actions, it looks like even some veteran players are confused about certain mechanics in the game. On Reddit, user FreedomOwn2329 confessed that they had no idea how the game's beam clash actually works, despite having logged more than 300 hours playing it. Beam clashes are officially called "beam impacts" in-game, though some fans also call them "beam struggles." They're a minigame mechanic that occurs when two players fire their powerful beam attacks at each other. The beams then clash, triggering a minigame that challenges each player to overcome the other's beam. The winner of the clash stuns and grounds their opponent.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero Fans Explain Beam Clash Mechanics

Many community members chimed in with their own explanations of how the beam clash works. The beam clash system in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is inspired by Budokai Tenkaichi, but differs in execution. This time it relies on players filling a black meter with orange energy, and then pressing a button to "feed" that energy to their beam. The player that manages to feed more energy wins the clash.

One player, Charming_Tennis4010, used an easy-to-understand analogy to a bottle of juice to describe the different techniques players use to power up their beam during a clash. Some players try to mash the button as fast as possible to feed it in many small doses, while others wait until the gauge is nearly full, feeding the beam one big gulp at a time. Other players suggested that one reason the beam clash is poorly understood by even veteran players is that it's relatively uncommon in normal matches, and relies on two players using strong beam attacks at the same time. As a result, few players have a chance to "practice" beam clashes and internalize an understanding of the system.

It's good to see that players are still learning to master the game and discover new aspects of it for themselves months after release. With the new Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero updates expanding the roster even more, fans could have a lot to look forward to in the game's future.
