Summary

  • Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is now the highest-selling Dragon Ball game in the United States.
  • The game is also the fourth best-selling game of 2024 so far.
  • While the title's PC player count has dropped, many fans believe that upcoming DLC will bring fans back.

Little over a month after its release, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has made history as the highest-selling Dragon Ball game in the United States. Fans who had been wishing for a new Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi title for the past 17 years finally received one this October in the form of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero, which brought back the series’ classic 3D arena fighter gameplay alongside a wealth of new content inspired by Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and various non-canon material like the movies.

Reactions to Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero have been mostly positive among fans, with the game selling nearly three million copies at launch and quickly becoming one of the most-played titles on Steam even before then. However, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero’s PC player count has dropped since its successful release, and players have reported issues with hackers and balancing among the game’s packed roster of 182 playable characters. Despite this, many remain optimistic that Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will pick back up in 2025 thanks to its planned DLC packs.

In the meantime, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has managed to make history as the highest-selling Dragon Ball video game in the United States, as reported by IGN. The recently released October 2024 sales charts reveal that Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is also the fourth best-selling game of 2024 so far and the third highest-selling Bandai Namco game of all time, being only outdone by Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Is Now the Highest-Selling Dragon Ball Game in the US

As shown in the recent sales charts, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero was the second highest-selling game in the US throughout October 2024, with the top spot going to Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The rest of the top five slots were filled by the Silent Hill 2 remake, Plaion's boxing simulator Undisputed, and the Studio Zero-developed JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio. Some of the other titles included in the October 2024 sales list are Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and Sonic X Shadow Generations.

While it ultimately fell short of topping Call of Duty: Black Ops 6’s US sales last month, Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero has managed to push beyond the limit as the most successful Dragon Ball game in the United States, which is no small task considering the large amount of Dragon Ball titles that have been released and localized over the years. Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will have three new DLC waves next year, with the first centered around the 2022 Dragon Ball: Super Hero movie and the other two reportedly featuring characters from the recently released Dragon Ball Daima series.
