Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero was first announced in May 2021, with a teaser trailer released during Shueisha's Jump Festa '22 event in late December. The film will introduce several new characters in what’s set to be a new conflict between Goku and remnants of the Red Ribbon Army.

The film will feature Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo and Pan in prominent roles. The newest visual for the film hints at Bulma, Android 18, Trunks, and Goten having some sort of role in the movie as well. Hiroshi Kamiya and Mamoru Miyano will play the newly introduced Gamma #1 and Gamma #2, two Red Ribbon Army androids sent after Goku and his family. Kamiya is best known for his roles as Koyomi Araragi in the Monogatari Series, Yato in Noragami, and Levi Ackerman in Attack on Titan. Miyano is best known for playing Rintaro Okabe in Steins;Gate, Ling Yao in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Death The Kid in Soul Eater.

Super Hero is the second Dragon Ball Super film following 2018s Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The film will be entirely in CG, whereas Broly was a mix of CG and 2D animation. Planning for the film began in 2018, a year prior to Broly’s release. Akira Toriyama will once again be heavily involved in the project, handling both the screenplay and character design while also contributing lines of dialogue for the film.

Toei Animation will return to produce the film, with Super Hero standing as Kodama’s directorial debut. Naoki Satō will compose the score. Kodama previously served as the CG Sequence Director for Broly, and Satō has composed music for Assassination Classroom, Eureka Seven, and the Pretty Cure series.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will release in Japan on April 22, 2022. The film’s release schedule outside of Japan is expected to differ depending on the country and region.
