Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot revealed new information regarding its season pass in a recent trailer for its first DLC, and the changes point towards the likelihood of seeing Broly in DLC 3. With DLC 1 already revealed and DLC 2 most likely adapting the events of Resurrection F, fans are trying to guess at what DLC 3, the new story arc, might cover, and Broly's story is one very popular theory. There are a couple reasons for this, so a breakdown of the potential Broly DLC seems required to fully understand the Legendary Super Saiyan's chances of making it into the game on this season pass.
The trailer itself was mostly a montage of pivotal moments in the base game of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, but one key change that keen-eyed fans found at the end of the trailer was that the season pass has rebranded its original story episodes, which are now referred to as boss battle episodes. This is in line with what is known of DLC 1, which is set to feature training with Whis to unlock the Super Saiyan God form as well as a boss battle with Beerus, but is not exactly what fans were expecting from this first DLC.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Season Pass Changes
As was previously stated, the rebranding of the original episodes to boss battle episodes has big implications for DBZ: Kakarot's season pass. For one, it points towards the likelihood that DLC 2 will adapt the events of Resurrection F, introducing Golden Frieza and Super Saiyan Blue to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, but it also clears up some confusion about the season pass' new story arc. For a while, it was unclear what this story arc would cover, but now at least fans know it definitely won't be Battle of Gods and it probably won't be Resurrection F. Given that a Universe 6 DLC for DBZ: Kakarot is unlikely, what else could it be?
Broly in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
One important detail to notice about the season pass so far is that, although elements of Dragon Ball Super are being included, Super Saiyan God, Beerus, and Whis are all technically part of Dragon Ball Z as well. The first two movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, are Dragon Ball Z movies, meaning DBZ: Kakarot hasn't crossed the line into Super territory completely just yet. This brings up the point of what the new story arc will be about.
Back in January, just after the game's initial release, a dataminer found some hidden files in the game code showing a dialogue of Videl's in which she directly references the Earth's dragon balls and Broly himself. At the time, this led many to believe that Broly would be featured in the season pass, but now things are a bit more complicated. The dialogue found in those files is clearly referring to the Dragon Ball Z version of Broly, and more specifically is from a scene in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming.
Dragon Ball Z Broly or Dragon Ball Super Broly?
The information from the datamine clearly points towards a story arc adapting not just one but both of the Dragon Ball Z: Broly movies for the game, but how would this make any sense considering the two DLCs before it add Super Saiyan God and quite possibly Super Saiyan Blue? Truthfully, both stories have a potential to be told through Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot depending on how the developers want to approach Broly as a character. It has already been made clear that the DLC will be changing certain aspects of the story, such as how the Super Saiyan God ritual is being bypassed, so why not this?
Dragon Ball Z: Broly DLC for DBZ: Kakarot
The original Broly movies certainly have their flaws, such as Broly's less than compelling backstory or Vegeta's unsatisfactory performance and composure when faced with the monster, but they are nonetheless some of the most beloved of the Dragon Ball Z movies. Broly himself is also a fan favorite character, as evidenced by his being the only movie to get a canonized reboot so far. There are a lot of great fights and moments in both of these movies that could be enjoyable to see in a DLC for Kakarot, especially given Broly's obsession for Goku's Saiyan name and the way that ties into this game.
The numerous battles with Broly who is just an unstoppable force, as well as the iconic Family Kamehameha in which Goku and his sons, Gohan and Goten, fire off a devastating beam would transition into DBZ: Kakarot incredibly well. The main problem, of course, is how these battles would play out given that Goku and Vegeta will have Super Saiyan God. Furthermore, Gohan is actually still a child in the first Broly movie.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly in DBZ: Kakarot
The more recent, canon adaptation of Broly could also appear in Kakarot. This would be easier to justify, as Goku and Vegeta both make use of the Super Saiyan Blue form during this movie. Although these events technically occur after the events of the Tournament of Power, neither Goku nor Vegeta use any of the unique powerups (Ultra Instinct, SSB Evolution, SSB Kaioken) during the movie. The major problem here is that the existing pretext for a Broly DLC, the datamine, clearly indicates content from the Dragon Ball Z movies, not from Dragon Ball Super's recreation.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's Time Machine and Broly
The solution to all of these problems lies in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's time machine. The first Dragon Ball Z: Broly movie occuring while Gohan is still a kid can be explained by using the time machine. Perhaps the player travels back in time to before the cell saga to complete the events of this movie. The second Broly movie takes place just before the Buu Saga, so a similar solution can be found. Finally, the time machine is capable of travelling between timelines as well, so the Dragon Ball Super: Broly could even be introduced in addition to these.
