At the start of your journey in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, you will be asked to name the hero of the story. And like many other RPGs, the NPCs and party members you encounter in the game will call you by the name you choose, and there's no way to change it after the decision is made.

When some people play RPGs, they tend to stick with the canon name for the protagonist, such as Cloud in Final Fantasy 7 OG or Red in Pokemon Red. Some might find it weird to pick a different name when they've been used to calling the protagonist one specific name. In the case of the protagonist's canon name in Dragon Quest 3, it's a little complicated.

Dragon Quest 3 Remake: Difficulty Levels Explained

There are three difficulties in Dragon Quest 3 Remake; here's how to change between them and which is right for you.

What's the Canon Protagonist's Name in Dragon Quest 3 Remake?

dragon quest erdrick

So, technically, there is no "canon" name for the protagonist in any Dragon Quest game. Although the main hero of Dragon Quest 3 is known by the name of Erdrick (in English) and Loto (in Japanese), that's not their actual birth name. We say 'their' because the protagonist can be male or female, depending on your choice at the start of the game.

Interestingly enough, in Dragon Quest 3 Remake (at least the English version), you are not allowed to use the name Erdrick when picking your name. The game won't let you use it. However, you can use Loto.

The below section will go into spoilers about the ending of Dragon Quest 3. So, if you're sensitive about ending plot stuff, look away.

The reason why the game won't let you use Erdrick is because at the end of the game, once you finally make it back to the king, you will become the Hero of Aliahan, and the king will appoint you with the title of Erdrick. So you see, Erdrick is not just a name.
