Ahead of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake's upcoming launch, Square Enix shared a set of guidelines for streaming or sharing gameplay of the RPG. These guidelines state which platforms images and videos of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake can be shared on, along with notes on how to handle spoilers for the story of the game. The upcoming Dragon Quest 3 remake is being done in the same style as Team Asano's HD-2D games like Octopath Traveler, having pixel art that has been redone from the ground up and will be set against highly rendered 3D backgrounds.

Dragon Quest 3 is one of the games that helped define the genre, with a lot of elements from it refined in sequels and other JRPGs. While older Dragon Quest games, including DQ3, have been ported onto other platforms, this full-on remake is being made to celebrate the franchise's 35th anniversary. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake will be launching on November 14, with HD-2D remakes of the first two Dragon Quest games coming the following month to complete the Erdrick Trilogy. As Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake's release draws near, Square Enix gave out a set of guidelines for gamers looking to stream the game or post content about it.

Dragon Quest HD-2D Remakes Will Show a Surprise At The Trilogy's Conclusion
Dragon Quest HD-2D Teases a Surprise for Playing Games in Chronological Order

Director Yuji Horii states that players who experience the Dragon Quest HD-2D remakes in chronological order will be surprised at the conclusion.

Square Enix shared these guidelines on the official Dragon Quest website, stating that it is permitting fans to share certain images and gameplay videos of the game for non-commercial purposes on places like YouTube, Niconico, Twitch, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. Square Enix also allows monetization of content via advertising through platform-operated programs as well. The main condition for streaming or sharing things about the Dragon Quest 3 remake is to include a copyright and attribution markup.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Streaming Guidelines

  • Sharing Videos (including those containing background music) for non-commercial purposes on video-sharing sites such as YouTube, Niconico, Twitch, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram is allowed. Monetization of content via advertising through platform-operated programs on YouTube, Twitch, Mixer, and other similar services is also allowed.
  • No spoilers: all content that includes details of major plot developments must be marked with a clear spoiler warning.
  • Gamers are asked not to livestream or upload videos/screenshots of the game's ending after the final battle with Zoma, and the post-ending content until after December 13, 2024.
  • Gamers are not permitted to create edited video content or playlists with the goal of showing only cinematic scenes (as opposed to gameplay), or only listening to music from the game.

The main point of concern when streaming the upcoming game will be spoilers. While the game is over 35 years old, Square Enix wants to make sure new fans starting with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D won't have their experience spoiled, meaning streams or videos of the game covering major plot developments must have a clear warning. Moreover, Square Enix requests that fans refrain from livestreaming or uploading videos/screenshots of the remake after the final battle with Zoma and any post-ending content until after December 13, 2024. Players are also prohibited from making videos or creating playlists that only feature the cutscenes or music of the remake without showing any "normal gameplay" in between.

Considering how Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake will also have new story content revolving around the protagonist's father, it's likely that Square Enix wants to keep this part a surprise for players to discover all on their own. Square Enix enforcing these guidelines isn't entirely new, as companies like Atlus had their own streaming rules for games like Persona 5 Royal.
