It's entirely possible for Empress Nadinia, leader of Battahl, to die during the course of Dragon's Dogma 2. However, if you can thwart the assassins during the quest "Shadowed Prayers," your reward includes a whole set of quests you won't otherwise get.

"Crossing in Shadow" is the third quest of this set, taking place after "Shadowed Prayers" and "A Candle in the Storm." In it, Empress Nadinia makes a surprising trip outside Battahl, and you can either help her complete her goal or mess up so badly that you wind up in gaol.

How to Start Crossing in Shadow

Dragons Dogma 2 Crossing Start
The empress's handmaid has a job for you in Dragon's Dogma 2.

Before you can get this quest, you have to fulfill a few requirements:

  • You must successfully apprehend the assassin during the quest "Shadowed Prayers."
  • You must complete the quest "A Candle in the Storm." Any ending will work.
  • You must complete "A Place to Call Home" and buy the house in the Merchant Quarter of Vernworth.
  • You must be in your Vernworth home after dark. You don't need to sleep till nightfall in the house, but doing so is the quickest way to trigger the quest.

Once you meet all the requirements, Nadinia's handmaid, Vera, will enter your home and ask for your help. Nadinia has come to Vernworth on secret business, but she needs an escort to help get her to the Rose Chateau before anyone has a chance to recognize her. The Rose Chateau is the bordelie run by Wilhelmina, but her status and the status of the Dragon's Dogma 2's quest "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" won't affect this one.

Once you accept the quest, Vera and Nadinia will lead the way across Vernworth. You can't take any shortcuts or alternate routes across town, because there are two encounters you must deal with along the way.

Should You Threaten or Give Gold to Philbert?

Dragons Dogma 2 Crossing Philbert
Philbert, a racist merchant in Dragon's Dogma 2.

The first encounter takes place on the far side of the market square. The merchant, Philbert, refuses to sell medicine to a desperate beastren, and Nadinia wants to help him out. Your options are to give Philbert gold, threaten him, or leave.

  • If you give Philbert 1,000 gold, he'll reluctantly sell you the medicine, and you'll automatically give it to the desperate beastren. Nadinia will be happy, and you can continue the quest.
  • If you threaten Philbert, he'll call for guards to arrest you. This will interrupt the quest, causing it to fail, and you'll probably end up in gaol.
  • If you leave, Nadinia will be upset, but you can continue the quest.

Dragon's Dogma 2's Pathfinder is one of the game's most mysterious characters but plays what is arguably the story's most influential role.

Should You Agree to Aid the Thief or Refuse to Help?

Dragons Dogma 2 Crossing Fiachra
Fiachra, a beastren thief in Dragon's Dogma 2.

The second encounter takes place in the Noble Quarter. A beastren thief, Fiachra, is running from the guards, and he hopes you and Nadinia will help him escape. This time you can't just leave: your options are to refuse to aid him or agree to aid him.

  • If you refuse to aid Fiachra, a guard will swiftly catch him. Nadinia will mention that helping him wouldn't have done any good in the long run, and you can continue to the Rose Chateau.
  • If you agree to aid him, the guard will suspect your involvement and try to arrest you. You might not get arrested on the spot (there seems to be a bug that sometimes delays the arresting officer), but you'll definitely fail the quest.

If you get Nadinia to the Rose Chateau, she'll explain what she's doing in the city, then take you back to the market square to discuss Vermund's beastren founder. Once she's finished, she'll leave Vernworth and complete the quest. Your reward for a successful escort is 4,000 XP, 20,000 gold, and a Sunbloom. If you fail and get arrested, you'll get the XP and nothing more.
