Griffins are ferocious monsters that occasionally cause havoc around populated areas in Dragon's Dogma 2. These are somewhat rare creatures that are as deadly as they are imposing. Fighting a Griffin can be taxing to the Arisen's party, but not if they know how to exploit its weaknesses and prevent it from flying away.

The following guide covers the major weaknesses of Griffins as well as some tricks on how to fight one. Take note that these are fairly high-level enemies, and players will need to get the right gear and a decent party of pawns in Dragon's Dogma 2 if they want to kill a Griffin efficiently.

How To Find Griffins

The first step to hunting a Griffin is to know where their usual haunts are. These creatures often prey on oxes. As such, a Griffin might suddenly swoop down from the sky even if you're well within a city's perimeter.

There's a very specific spot on the western end of Vermund where a Griffin usually hunts. This patch of land is marked by a Riftstone and a campsite, and you'll have to cross the stream from the main road connecting the Checkpoint Rest Town and the rest of the highway (unless you take the route through the zombie-filled cave). Dragon's Dogma 2's fast travel system can get you close to this spot if you take an oxcart to the border town or teleport to a placed Portcrystal.

Once you reach the spot, wait for a while and a Griffin should appear. If one doesn't, set up camp, and rest until morning. You'll see it flying in from the east.

How to Kill Griffins

Griffins normally use physical attacks in combat, though they will sometimes flap their wings to create immense air pressure that might knock players and their pawns off their feet. Fighting a Griffin involves the usual dance of blocking, dodging, and attacking, but when it comes to beating one as quickly as possible, there are some tricks that you can use.

Griffins are very weak to fire. Anything that can light the beast on fire will be extremely effective here. High Flagration is one of the best Sorcerer weapon skills in Dragon's Dogma 2 when it comes to making things burn — if you're expressly hunting a Griffin for your adventure, then consider bringing this skill along with throwables or arrows that cover enemies in oil. Weakspots include the head, wings, and spine (right between the wings).

If you're playing a melee character, stand on its back with a flame-enchanted weapon, then keep attacking. You'll eventually set its wings on fire, possibly knocking it down and preventing it from flying away for as long as it's burning.

Speaking of flying away, when it suddenly pauses in combat, that means it's about to take off. You have a couple of options here:

  • Knock it down with strong attacks like Thief's Powder Charge or Warrior's Heavensward Sunder.
  • Ride it back to its nest.

If you decide to do the latter, you'll end up in a Griffin nest at the southern edge of the Misty Marshes. The place is full of treasure, including a very rare Portcrystal. This also unlocks the Regriffining achievement/trophy.
