Dragon's Dogma 2 adds a few new Vocations for players to choose from that weren't available in its predecessor, Dragon's Dogma, and its expansion Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. One of the most highly anticipated Vocations is the Mystic Spearhand, a kind of fast-paced fusion of a warrior and mage.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Best Starting Vocations, Ranked

There are a total of ten Vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2, but the Arisen can only select one of these four at the beginning of the game.

But as awesome as the Mystic Spearhand looks, and as unique as its moveset and playstyle is, players won't be able to check out this new Vocation until at least a few hours in. To unlock the Mystic Spearhand, players have to complete a few prerequisite quests.

Updated March 25, 2024 by Erik Petrovich: In Dragon's Dogma 2, there are a lot of different methods to unlock the game's numerous Vocations. The earliest method to unlock Mystic Spearhand DD2 players can follow is to head back to Melve and defeat a rotten Dragon after completing the first of Brant's quests. However, there are two alternative methods to get the Mystic Spearhand unlock. The first is available soon after completing the Coronation in Vernworth, while the other is available later in the game after reaching the Beastren kingdoms. Both of these methods are technically easier than fighting a pustule-ridden Dragon so early in the game, though players will have to wait significantly longer to try out the flashy – and effective – Mystic Spearhand.

Mystic Spearhand Vocation Overview

Mystic Spearhand from Dragon's Dogma 2

The Mystic Spearhand, a vocation available only to the Arisen, combines melee and magick, making them a well-balanced vocation that is effective from any range. The Mystic Spearhand is a master of their unique weapon, the Duospear. Using magick, they can paralyze enemies or hurl multiple objects at them.

The Mystic Spearhand Dragon's Dogma 2 Vocation is something of a combination of a melee warrior and a mage. Wielding a unique weapon that resembles a Twinblade from Elden Ring or Darth Maul's lightsaber from Star Wars, Mystic Spearhands have a commanding presence as they interlace empowered melee abilities with flashy spells as they teleport around the battlefield.

Their signature ability is the ability to charge and cast a short-range blast of magic, which can interrupt and pause enemies in mid-attack. The Vocation doesn't have many ways to avoid incoming damage, but with an Invincibility spell, plus the sheer agility of Mystic Spearhands, you'll hardly ever find yourself in harm's way, anyway.

Mystic Spearhands have a huge variety of skills to choose from, but the Vocation is only available for the Arisen themself, and not their Pawns. In addition to their ability to teleport and control enemies, the Dragon's Dogma 2 Mystic Spearhand vocation can lift targets with telepathy, leap into the air for aerial attacks, summon a shield for all nearby allies, and blast small foes away a ridiculous distance – far enough that they can no longer be looted.

The unique Pawn system returns in Dragon's Dogma 2, and there are several ways to hire new Pawns to your party soon after starting the game.

It's a class that many Dragon's Dogma 2 players are eager to unlock and try out, but it will take a few hours – and a few quests – to reach the point in the game when it becomes available for the Arisen. Thankfully, there are a few ways to get the DD2 Mystic Spearhand unlock.

How To Unlock Mystic Spearhand In Dragon's Dogma 2

Step One: Monster Culling

After you complete the tutorial, get through the Borderwatch Outpost and Melve, and arrive in Vernworth, you will be introduced to Captain Brant. Brant appears in the game's opening cinematic welcoming the Arisen player character to their throne, and he remains loyal to the true Sovren – you, not the Queen Regent.

He asks the Arisen to complete several tasks in order to gain the attention of the Queen Regent and the False Sovren. The first of these tasks is called Monster Culling, and requires the Arisen to travel to three locations – Trevo Mine, Harve Village, and a shipping convoy east of Vernworth – to slay monsters and prove your valor.

Dragon's Dogma 2: How To Enable 60 FPS (& 120 FPS)

Though it's possible to reach 120 FPS in Dragon's Dogma 2, you'll need a powerful computer – and may still have to adjust some graphics settings.

After completing this, head back to Brant in the inn in Vernworth to get a few more main story quest starters. But to unlock the Mystic Spearhand vocation quickly, ignore these new prompts. Instead, gear up, buy provisions, and prepare to head back to Melve.

Step Two: Back To Melve

Once you have turned in Monster Culling to Brant, head to the northeastern gate of Vernworth and wait at the Oxcart station until the next departure. To fast forward time, just interact with either the sign at the station or sit down on the nearby bench and Doze Off a few times. There's a chance that the cart will be attacked on the way, but unless a Gryphon swoops down, the cart should be fine and continue its journey once the enemies are routed.

Though Melve is located to the northwest of Vernworth, the northeast Oxcart station in the city is the one that will take you there – the Oxcart station on the west side of the city goes into the mountains far to the west, and extremely far away from Melve. You will know if you are at the right station if an NPC named Donovan approaches you with a quest to deliver a letter to Melve.

Step Three: Readvent of Calamity (Or, Dragon's Dermatology)

When you get back to Melve, you will walk into a dreadful situation: the city that was already attacked by The Dragon is being attacked by another Dragon. But this one isn't like others (or the game's namesake Dragon). Its body is riddled with sores and all manner of skin ailments, and it's not nearly as hard to defeat as a Dragon without any afflictions.

Dragon's Dogma 2: How To Destroy Bridges (& How To Repair Them)

Players can destroy bridges in Dragon's Dogma 2 to cut off enemies. Here's how to do it, and how to repair them so you can pass through them again.

By

Find a way to climb onto its body, then onto its back to save Stamina while standing up, and just start wailing away at these sores. To end this encounter, you don't need to defeat the sore-ridden Dragon, just destroy enough of these pustules to make it fly away. After ending the second Dragon attack on Melve, there's just one more step to unlock the Dragon's Dogma 2 Mystic Spearhand vocation.

Step Four: Speak To Sigurd

After the battle is won, look around at the nearby NPCs for one wearing a hood and wielding a two-sided sword. The man you are looking for is named Sigurd. Once you defeat the afflicted Dragon and approach him, he will remark that he is impressed and offer to teach you his ways, in your shared pursuit of The Dragon.

After you finish speaking to Sigurd a notification should pop up letting you know that the Mystic Spearhand has been unlocked. As it is an Arisen-only Vocation, head to the nearest Vocational Guild location to change to it. As with other advanced Vocations, you must pay 150 DSP to allow your Arisen to become a Mystic Spearhand, while starter Dragon's Dogma 2 Vocations only cost 100 to swap to. Once you have bought the Vocation, it's free to swap back and forth.

Unlock Mystic Spearhand Alternate Methods: Melve Skip & Batthal

There is a simpler way to unlock Mystic Spearhand Vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2, but it takes a little bit longer. Though it's possible to return to Melve soon after completing Brant's first quest to unlock the Mystic Spearhand, if this opportunity is missed, the game presents another two ways to get the DD2 Mystic Spearhand.

  • After the Coronation, as long as you have completed the Scaly Invaders quest, return to Harve Village to find it rebuilt. Defeat another round of Saurians that invade the village, then look for Sigurd's hut on the far side of the village, called the Coastal Hut. Talk to him to get Mystic Spearhand without ever heading back to Melve.
  • Alternatively, a Mystic Spearhand unlock method can also be found much later, after the Arisen reaches Batthal. When you are sent to Dragonsbreath Tower in southwest Batthal, Sigurd can be found standing right outside. Talk to him before going in to fight the Drake, and he will both offer you his assistance and unlock the Mystic Spearhand.

Both of these methods still require players to return to a Vocation Guild (or Inn with Vocation options) to swap after getting the Mystic Spearhand unlock. But if you want to find where to get the Mystic Spearhand vocation early, you'll have to head back to Melve instead of waiting for the Coronation or reaching Batthal.
