At the start of Dragon's Dogma 2, players will be able to choose between several Vocations, which function similarly to the way classes function in typical action-RPGs. Each Vocation features several key elements that will fundamentally alter how Dragon's Dogma 2 plays. The process of finding, unlocking, and mastering each Vocation is one of the game's great joys.
Currently, there are 10 known Vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2. While several are available at the start of the game, many more become available as players explore the world. This is truly a case where curiosity is rewarded, as many of the most interesting Vocations give little to no indication that they even exist, let alone where they can be found. This guide will point players in the right direction, showing them exactly when and where each Vocation can be found.
This guide is a work in progress. While all vocations have been revealed by Capcom, we do not yet know how to unlock them all. As these discoveries are made, they will be added to this guide as quickly as possible.
Dragon's Dogma 2 Review
Dragon's Dogma 2 is everything fans could want from a Dragon's Dogma sequel, but that also means it has a few rough edges.
All Vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2
Dragon's Dogma 2 features ten Vocations. When players first begin their playthrough, they will be greeted with a robust Character Creation system that allows them to pick from the four available Vocations, which are as follows:
- Fighter: Traditional knight class, fights with shield and sword.
- Archer: Bow-based fighting, focus on ranged attacks.
- Thief: The thief is fast and agile, fighting with twin daggers.
- Mage: The mage uses spells to both attack enemies and support their party.
These four vocations constitute the base-level classes that are available at start, the rest must be unlocked. There are six unlockable vocations, which are:
- Warrior: Warriors use greatswords to focus on aggressive attacking, always pushing forward.
- Sorcerer: Sorcerer uses magick offensively, focusing on attacks using powerful spells.
- Trickster: The Trickster uses illusions to deceive their enemies, and can also provide useful support to pawns.
- Magick Archer: Using magick arrows, this archer focuses on long-range attacks and healing.
- Mystic Spearhand: Uses both melee and magick to attack at any range.
- Warfarer: Powerful vocation that allows access to all weapons, in exchange for lower base stats.
How to Unlock the Warrior and Sorcerer Vocations
The Warrior and Sorcerer vocations are unlockable through a single mission called 'Vocation Frustration.' This mission can be initiated as soon as players reach Vernworth, the capital of Vermund. To begin this mission, head to the local guild hall, and speak to the attendant on duty. He will explain to the player that they do not have the weapons to offer the Warrior and Sorcerer vocations, due to the fact that a shipment to the local armorer was stolen. Speaking to the armorer leads to the proposal that the player head out and find the weapons required to unlock the vocations themselves.
Once the player accepts, they will have to head west to the Trevo Mine. Players must make their way through the cave system to find two specific weapons:
-
Grievous Horns: an archistaff
-
Two-Hander
: a greatsword
These are found in two of the nicer-looking treasure chests, and while there are some in Trevo Mine that are more hidden, these two chests are essentially out in the open. They are very hard to miss if players explore the mine thoroughly.
Once players have both weapons, they will want to return to the guild. The attendant will not accept both weapons at once, so make sure to complete the process twice. After completing this, players will be able to unlock both the Warrior and Sorcerer through the 'Change Vocations' menu option. Remember that players must have the necessary DCP to unlock a vocation before it can be switched to.
If, for some reason, players accidentally lose or sell one or both of the required weapons, head to the Scrap Shop in the Checkpoint Rest Town. This small shop offers a 'Special Finds' menu option that features lost quest items. While they are expensive, this is currently the only known way to retrieve lost items.
If players miss 'Vocation Frustration,' it is possible that bringing an unrelated greatsword or archistaff that was found while exploring will unlock these vocations, though this method is not yet confirmed.
How to Unlock the Mystic Spearhand Vocation
The Mystic Spearhand Vocation can be unlocked in three different ways. As they each occur at different times during the game, players should not worry if they miss the first opportunity. The three opportunities are:
- Melve: During the second dragon attack on Melve, an NPC named Sigurd will be found aiding in the battle. Speaking to Sigurd at this time will bring up a dialogue menu with two options. Players will want to select 'Ask about his manner of fighting.' Playing this option out will unlock Mystic Spearhand.
- Harve: Players will first visit Harve during 'Monster Culling.' Completing this task, and 'Scaly invaders,' which is unlocked after 'Monster Culling' is complete, will see the town begin to be rebuilt. Once that occurs, players will want to wait several in-game days. If players miss Sigurd during the second dragon attack on Melve, they can essentially return any time after Harve has been rebuilt to find him at the Coastal Hut on the village's eastern edge. Speaking to him here will result in the same dialogue options, and the same outcome.
- Dragonsbreath Tower: The third opportunity players will have to unlock the Mystic Spearhand vocation comes much later, when Battahl and its surrounding areas are not only accessible, but survivable. Check the maps above to find 'Dragonsbreath Tower,' which is in the southwestern corner of the main map. Outside the tower area, players will encounter Sigurd. Here, he will unlock the vocation for players, before accompanying them on an extremely difficult dragon hunt.
How to Unlock the Trickster Vocation
The Trickster Vocation is unlocked by visiting the Revered Shrine in Battahl. This location is relatively easy to find, though it is in an area that is filled with significant danger. Players will want to make sure they are fully prepared to fight when they head out to complete this task.
The shrine itself is not far from Checkpoint Rest Town. However, players will need to possess the
Border Entry Permit to enter Battahl through the gate located here. The permit is acquired by allowing Captain Brant to interrogate the prisoner during 'The Arisen's Shadow.' Bradnt will give it to the player once his series of quests has been completed. Once the player has entered the shrine, speak to Luz and go through all options to unlock the Trickster. It is the easiest vocation to unlock in terms of process, it's simply a matter of waiting until Battahl is accessible.
Dragon's Dogma 2: Do Age and Moniker Mean Anything?
Age and Moniker are two of many elements of the extensive character creator in Dragon's Dogma 2. Here's a brief explanation on what they do in-game.
How to Unlock the Magick Archer Vocation
The Magick Archer Vocation will likely be the last of the major vocations that players will unlock. This is largely due to its location on Volcanic Island, which will be nearly impossible to access until late in the game. Once players have made it down through Battahl, and gone through Drabnir's Grotto, follow these steps to unlock the Magick Archer vocation:
- Look for Gautstafr, a dwarf with an injured back, along the path to the first campsite on Volcanic Island (heading east from Battahl). Gautstafr will ask the player to gather 3 'wildflowers,' though he will accept any of the herbs picked in the game. Once those are handed over, it will initiate 'Put a Spring in Thy Step.' Competing this mission is how the Magick Archer vocation is unlocked.
- Gautstafr will ask you to escort him home, and after meeting his wife and a brief conversation, will realize he needs to go to the healing hot springs. Players must escort him to the springs, and though there will be several fights along the way, it is essentially a simple escort quest.
- Upon reaching the springs, Gautstafr's wife will reveal that she actually followed you to the springs, as she didn't trust you. As a reward, she will unlock the Magick Archer vocation.
How to Unlock the Warfarer Vocation
The Warfarer Vocation is likely the easiest of all vocations to miss, and if players are not careful, they can lock themselves out completely. This vocation is unlocked by a drunken warrior named Lamond, found at the Volcanic Island Base Camp. Players will need the following items to unlock the Warfarer Vocation:
- Access to Battahl
- 3 Bottles of Newt Liquer
Players will automatically get access to Battahl through the main quest, once Captain Brant completes his interrogation of the agent from Battahl that players apprehend in 'The Arisen's Shadow.' If players wish to reach Battahl early, they will have to sneak around the gate at Checkpoint Rest Town, either through the mountain pass, or through the ornate oxcart that passes through. This oxcart is likely the easiest way to get through the gate early, but there is no set schedule.
Players will find Lamond on the Volcanic Island. He is found outside the same hot springs that players will take Gautstafr to during the quest to unlock the Magick Archer vocation. Lamond will initiate a quest called 'The Scotted Sage,' in which he asks the player to bring him several items. This will require the player to bring him bottles of Newt Liquer. Players can find one bottle at Gautdtafr's cabin, and can purchase the other two from Higg's Tavern Stand in Bakbattahl. They will cost players 5,000 gold each. Lamond will require three bottles of Newt Liquer. Once the mission is complete, Lamond will unlock the vocation. Players will simply need to return to a guild hall to make it active. This will allow players to have access too all skills, weapons, and armor. Unfortunately, players will not have access to each vocation's Maister's teachings, but everything else is available.
