Borderlands 4 is generous when it comes to enemies dropping a bunch of loot, like weapons and equipment for players. However, the limited inventory space on your character will force you to discard some equipment to make space for newer items. So, you'll need to clear up your inventory by either dropping stuff on the ground, or simply using other means to discard all your useless pieces of gear.

For too long, the Borderlands series has relied on quantity of guns to increase its longevity, so it's time for Borderlands 4 to bring that to an end.

How to Drop Items in Borderlands 4

While fighting enemies on Kairos, players will be acquiring loot at a rapid rate in Borderlands 4. While receiving higher-level gear and weapons is a great thing, players will eventually need to do a bit of inventory management and discard a few items to make room for newer ones.

While the game does not explicitly tell you how to drop items from your inventory, and the on-screen prompt isn't quite apparent, here's some quick info on the controls you need to press to drop items from your inventory.

Platform

Controls

PC (Keyboard)

Highlight the item, then press and hold the "R" key.

Xbox (Controller)

Select the item, then press and hold the "Y" button.

PlayStation (Controller)

Select the item, then press and hold the "Triangle" button.

Additionally, you can simply use the swap function to trade the item on the ground with the one you have equipped. If you have space in your inventory, the replaced item will be stored there. If you don't have space, then the swap feature will discard your currently equipped weapon on the ground.

Best Ways to Clear Up Inventory Space

While dropping items on the ground becomes necessary if your inventory becomes full, and you need to pick up an important piece of equipment, it should be done as a last resort in Borderlands 4. There are other ways that players can deal with unwanted loot in the game, which will either help you profit off an item or save it for later use. Let's check these methods out.

Selling Weapons and Items

Instead of simply discarding a weapon or an item on the battlefield, it's best to sell them for profit at any of the vending machines in a safe house. It's one of the best ways to earn money in Borderlands 4, considering the amount of loot you'll receive after taking down enemies and bosses.

To effectively sell your unwanted loot, first, you'll need to head into your inventory and mark the items as "Junk." Once you've marked all the unwanted items as Junk, simply head over to a vendor and press the action button to sell all of them for a hefty sum of cash. This way is the best way to clear your inventory space, while making some money on the side to spend on other stuff.

Storing Weapons and Items in Banks

If you're a veteran of the Borderlands series, you'll know how helpful Banks are for storing all the gear that you need later. There might be some weapons or items in your inventory that you aren't using at the time, but don't want to discard or sell either.

So, you can simply head to one of the banks in Borderlands 4 and store them over here. This way, you won't lose the item but will clear your personal inventory to make space for all the new gear you'll collect while hunting down enemies.
