After previously mining Granite Stone, Copper Ore, and Iron Ore, the next step of progression in Dune: Awakening is to find and mine Carbon Ore, with this being one of the materials required to produce Steel Ingots.

How To Mine Carbon Ore In Dune: Awakening

Dune Awakening - Cutteray Mk2

Before players set off to mine Carbon Ore, there are a few things they will need.

A Powerful Enough Mining Tool

As players progress through the game, they will encounter harder ores that require more powerful mining tools to be cracked. For Carbon Ore, players will need a Cutteray Mk2. Beyond Carbon, it is also capable of mining Erythrite Crystals.

A Cutteray Mk2 is produced via a General Frabricator and requires the following components:

  • 10 Iron Ingots
  • 7 EMF Generators

More powerful mining tools are also more efficient, mining larger yields. Some Planetologist Skills also help with this.

A Sandbike With Storage

As players are likely to face a fair journey, with them possibly traveling from a base in the Vermillius Gap, they will need a Sandbike. Furthermore, as lots of Carbon Ore will be needed, it's best to upgrade the Sandbike with storage, allowing them to transport way more Ore and other loot.

Consider a Sandbike Inventory Mk2 if possible, for even more storage.

Carbon Ore Location In Dune: Awakening

Carbon Ore in Dune: Awakening is all found in one region, Jabal Eifrit Al-Janub. Once players arrive here, they should see it everywhere, with the appearance of white crystals coming out of a brown rock.

For those who haven't discovered Jabal Eifrit Al-Janub yet, it is north of the Eastern Vermillius Gap, west of Hagga Rift, and east of the northern part of the Western Vermillius Gap.

When raiding camps in this area and other nearby ones, players will often find Carbon Ore as loot.

With Jabal Eifrit Al-Janub being bordered by dangerous drumsand and quicksand to the west and south, an easier way to reach it is to head east from the Eastern Vermillius Gap into Hagga Rift and drive up.

Braver players can try to find gaps between the drumsand though, and reach the Carbon Ore location faster. Lastly, be aware that every Tuesday, there is a Coriolis Storm, which mostly affects the Deep Desert, but also randomizes the exact location of resources. Carbon Ore will still be found in the same general location, but not in the exact same places.

What Is Carbon Ore Used For In Dune: Awakening?

Dune Awakening - Make Steel Ingot

Carbon Ore is the main ingredient for crafting Steel Ingots in Dune: Awakening, with Steel being crucial for the mid-game. Steel Ingots are produced at a Small Ore Refinery using the following materials:

  • 4 Carbon Ore
  • 1 Iron Ingot
  • 50 Water

This will produce a single Steel Ingot, hammering home the message that lots of Carbon Ore is needed. As plenty of water will be used too for this process and others, make sure to be aware of the best methods for gathering and storing large quantities of water.
