In Dune: Awakening, players unlock more Skills as they level up, and some of these Skills are active Abilities, such as the Shigawire Claw grappling hook or the Bindu Sprint. However, at the start of the game, only two Abilities can be equipped, but in the Skills menu, players should see that there is a 3rd Ability slot, which is locked.
If players have tried grinding levels to try and unlock this 3rd Ability slot, then they are out of luck, as it is instead acquired by doing a specific main quest. Players should make this a priority, as an extra Ability can make a huge difference in combat or help them traverse Arrakis more efficiently.
How To Unlock Your 3rd Ability Slot In Dune: Awakening
To unlock the 3rd ability slot, players will need to find and complete the Fourth Trial of Aql, which naturally means finding and completing the first three Trials of Aql too.
The Fourth Trial Of Aql Location
The Fourth Trial of Aql can be found in the Eastern Vermillius Gap, atop a ginormous rock structure known as the Hammer, but officially named 'Mirzabah's Head. This region can be accessed fairly early on after building a Sandbike. Players should be warned that they face a fair climb, so it's best to have Abilities, such as a Shigawire Claw or a Suspensor Pad to help players climb. The Mountaineer Passive from the Planetologist Skill set will also help with the climbing.
Players should also be aware of fall damage and have a good Suspensor Belt equipped for safety.
Upon reaching the summit, players will enter a cave system and eventually find an altar with Spice to inhale. This will start the trial.
The Fourth Trial Of Aql Combat
In this trial, players are introduced to the consumption of Spice in order to reach a Prescient state, where their abilities are enhanced and on lower cooldowns, while dealing more damage overall.
During the trial, players will temporarily gain access to three Swordmaster Skills, replacing their own. With these melee Abilities and a Crysknife, players have to defeat a number of sand foes.
How To Unlock The Trooper Skill Tree In Dune Awakening
Although players must pick a training background at the beginning of Dune: Awakening, they can eventually unlock the other available Skill Trees.
Equipping & Using The 3rd Ability
After completing the trial, players are finally able to equip a 3rd Ability of their choice. To do so, go to the Skill menu and press S to open up a submenu. Here players will see and set their available Abilities. They should also have 3 techniques equipped.
The default binding for the 3rd Ability is X on Keyboard and Mouse, whereas those using a controller will need to press both Bumper buttons at the same time.
