Dune: Awakening players are reporting that some of their items are going missing, and the development team has acknowledged the problem by suggesting an unconventional and not very player-friendly bug fix. The popularity of Dune: Awakening has been falling in recent days, and the development team at Funcom's latest bit of advice might not win back the players it's been losing.
Launching on PC on June 10, Dune: Awakening got off to a strong start on Steam, with opening-week concurrent player counts rising above 189,000. Good early impressions of the sci-fi survival game have had an impact, as the game's all-time user reviews on Steam put it into the "Mostly Positive" category, with 74 percent player approval. But several developments in the last several weeks have had many opinions souring, with only 56 percent of reviews within the last 30 days being positive and the highest player spike in the last week peaking at less than 37,000 players.
Dune: Awakening's Endgame Is a Desert
Dune: Awakening’s early game thrives on tension and discovery, but its Deep Desert endgame leaves the sands feeling empty and without much purpose.
Dune: Awakening Is Losing Players' Items
One of the latest problems, reported after the game's scheduled August 13 update, is a resource bug that's causing players' items in Dune: Awakening to disappear from their inventories. Specifically, this bug seems to be going into effect when players travel between sections of the Deep Desert or to other maps. The development team has addressed this problem through an in-game alert, indicating that the problem should be patched through a hotfix update that is expected to launch on August 14. While players wait for a permanent solution to the item loss issue, the alert announcement has given players a workaround that they can employ, though many are not satisfied with what it requires them to do.
According to the message, players can avoid the item loss bug by delaying travel for up to 10 minutes after filling the inventories of their Dune: Awakening vehicles. Although this workaround should only be necessary for about a day or so, players are expressing their displeasure with the development team for the long periods of inactivity they're being asked to endure. Many have suggested that waiting around after harvesting Spice is a fool's errand, and multiple players have suggested that they'll avoid venturing through the Deep Desert or booting up the game at all until the problem is fixed.
The item loss bug isn't the only issue that players have been having since the game's launch about two months ago. The development team has already had to fix an issue that allowed for the duplication of items, and Funcom temporarily disabled Steam Family Sharing to combat cheats and exploits. Additionally, Dune: Awakening reimbursed players for a bug in July that inadvertently deleted their bases and equipment. There has been no indication yet that Funcom intends to reimburse players for items lost as a result of this latest bug.
Rise from survival to dominance on the most dangerous planet in the universe. Dune: Awakening combines the grit and creativity of sandbox survival games with the social interactivity of a large, persistent multiplayer game to create a unique and ambitious Open World Survival MMO.
