Sandworms are arguably the most iconic aspect of the Dune universe, prowling the vast sand dunes of Arrakis and feasting on anything that moves. Naturally, Sandworms are present in Dune: Awakening, too, and first among the many dangers of Arrakis, closely followed by the lack of water. Sandworms should be avoided at all costs.

Sandworm In Dune: Awakening, Explained

dune awakening may beta dates

Sandworms in Dune: Awakening essentially act as an environmental hazard. The Shai-Hulud, as they are known to the Fremen, are only present in open sand dune areas and cannot surface where the ground becomes rocky. They are attracted to vibrations in the sand from the movement of players, vehicles, and Thumpers. Gunshots and explosions will also catch their attention.

In the starting region, known as Hagga Basin, there are a number of smaller Sandworms, although they are just as deadly, and players will only realize they are smaller after seeing their larger counterparts in the Deep Desert.

In the Deep Desert, where there's plenty of PvP, players will come across the largest and most aggressive Sandworms, but these will often leave behind Spice deposits, meaning experienced players will want to seek them out to reap the rewards.

Understanding The Vibration Lines

Dune Awakening - Sandworm Vibration Lines

When players cross the open dunes, they will notice lines on their screen. These represent the vibrations they are making from moving. Stop moving, and the line goes still. If the line turns orange or red, that means a Sandworm is nearby, and as it gets closer, it will be more sensitive to vibrations.

If the line is red and picking up extreme vibrations, it's already too late to worry about being detected. At this point, you just need to get out of there, meaning you must see where the Sandworm is coming from.

Can You Ride Sandworms In Dune: Awakening?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to ride Sandworms in Dune: Awakening, even though this is possible in the lore. If you attempt to do so, you will be eaten. While there are no guarantees, the developers have not ruled out such a feature down the line,

Can You Kill Sandworms In Dune: Awakening?

Sandworms cannot be killed in Dune: Awakening, no matter the weapons, vehicles, and skills at your disposal. They are invincible and inevitable.

How To Avoid Sandworms In Dune: Awakening?

The main way to avoid Sandworms in Dune: Awakening is to stick to rocky outcrops where possible. Always look for the shortest path across the dunes, and plan ahead. Do not waste movement abilities when you don't have to; instead, save them for when a Sandworm gets close.

If you have to cross the dunes on foot, run the first half, and if the vibrations turn red, use the Bene Gesserit Bindu Sprint skill or the Trooper's Shigawire Claw to reach safety quickly. Don't use these abilities first, as you'll then be stranded for the more dangerous second half of the journey.

Unfortunately, erratic movement without rhythm does not appear to help as it does in the books and films.

Other Ways To Avoid Sandworms & Survive Their Attacks

  • Vehicles are much faster than traveling on foot, but you'll still have to be careful. Try to get a Sandbike early.
  • If a Sandworm rises up and then burrows toward you, the best thing is to drive in the direction it came from, essentially driving over it.
  • Flying vehicles such as Ornithopters are naturally best.
  • Eventually, players will be able to craft Thumpers, which are placed in the sand to make massive vibrations.
  • Other players can distract the Sandworm by making vibrations in another direction.
  • Crouching while moving can lower the Vibrations, but don't do this if the Sandworm is already dangerously close.
  • If you cross the border into another named region, Sandworms cannot follow.
  • Don't build your base on the open dunes, but build it just off rocky outcrops to give you a slight advantage when returning home.
  • Traversing the dunes at night won't help, aside from lowering the chances of getting sunstroke.

What Happens If A Sandworm Kills You In Dune: Awakening?

Dune Awakening - Sandworm Death

Dying to a Sandworm in Dune: Awakening is easily one of the worst things that can happen to you, as you will lose all of your current equipment, anything in your backpack, and a vehicle if you were driving one. This is much worse than normal deaths. You will then respawn at the Respawn Beacon you placed down or a checkpoint.

However, there is one upside to being eaten by a Sandworm. Players will gain a Worm Tooth, which can be used to craft an unfixed crysknife.
