Summary

  • Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft inspire an artist's customized Monster Manual.
  • World of Warcraft creatures are reimagined with D&D stats and visuals in personalized fan art.
  • Upcoming parts are planned for the WoW Monster Manual project by artist Yagiz Kani.

One World of Warcraft player has created a custom Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual, complete with stats and original illustrations for 13 different characters and creatures from Azeroth. This World of Warcraft fan art is the first part of a greater project, with more planned for the future.

Dungeons and Dragons and World of Warcraft go hand-in-hand, with the former acting as a major inspiration to the latter during its first inception. The name Warcraft itself was even inspired by a D&D character played by former Blizzard senior art director Samwise Didier. From World of Warcraft classes like the Paladin and spells like Cone of Cold, sharp-eyed fans can easily find homages to Dungeons and Dragons all over Azeroth.

Now, one artist is making a collaboration between these two franchises of their own. Dungeons and Dragons player, World of Warcraft fan, and aspiring Blizzard artist Yagiz Kani recently shared the first part of a custom Monster Manual featuring creatures of Azeroth. Shared on their personal Twitter and ArtStation, this project includes 13 different World of Warcraft creatures, each with custom illustrations and Dungeons and Dragons stats. Warlock minions like the Imp, Felhoud, Voidwalker, and Infernal, humanoid races like the Kobold, Quilboar, and Murloc, and even the infamous Hogger, Scourge of Elwynn, are just some of the denizens found within the first part of this fan-made Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual.

Kani made sure to emphasize that, while they have played Dungeons and Dragons, they are neither a game designer nor a dungeon master. These stat blocks are derived from esthetics and vibes first, rather than with concern for game balance. Even so, DMs who wished to use these World of Warcraft monsters in their own D&D games could easily use them as a solid starting point.

This is only the first of many parts Kani has planned for this personal WoW Monster Manual project. They are already making plans for a part two, which will feature some iconic World of Warcraft classes, on top of more creatures and races.

Beyond this project, Kani has created tons of other pieces of 2D and 3D fan art, including Marvel Rivals character concepts, the Dragon Slayer sword from Berserk, and Cloud’s Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7 rendered in WoW’s iconic style. Professionally, they have also served as the lead concept artist and lead texture artist of Way of Kings, a tower defense mobile game developed by Gameflex. Gamers interested in seeing what they create next should be sure to keep an eye on their ArtStation portfolio.
