EA has gone through various changes over the years. Between sports franchises, Star Wars spin-offs, and major IPs like Battlefield, EA has many different branches that make it a powerhouse in the industry. However, that growth also requires tough decisions to be made, and that sometimes means shutting down game servers in order to focus on fresh projects.

Maintaining servers for games that are becoming increasingly older or losing their original player base can become costly, but it's still sad seeing so many once-beloved titles get shut down. EA is no stranger to shutting down game servers, and in the past two years alone, the company has amassed a list of 61 titles that have met this fate.

2023 was particularly rough when it came to server shut-downs, as it makes up nearly a third of the 61 games in question. It's important to note that many of these titles are yearly sports games. This is going to be a continuing theme with these shut-downs. The Madden NFL games and FIFA continue to be successful franchises for EA, but as each new year brings forth a fresh game, shutting down servers can help incentivize gamers to continue to buy the newest titles.

Once again, a significant lineup of yearly sports releases is present. Another major theme of these shut-downs is found in the Battlefield franchise. Considering that Battlefield is one of EA's most popular franchises, it makes sense that the company would want to shut down servers when fresh entries are on the horizon. However, these older entries in the series still have passionate fans, making their shut-downs sting.

2025 Has Seen Several Big Shut-Downs, and More Are on the Way

  • Madden NFL 22 - October 20
  • FIFA 23 - December 12

2025 has seen a mix of both sports titles and action games, but one of the most controversial shut-downs this year has been the end of The Simpsons: Tapped Out. This mobile game based on the hit cartoon series lasted 12 strong years before EA shut down the servers at the beginning of 2025.

Despite its age, The Simpsons: Tapped Out had a solid player base that has continued to be vocal about their frustration. Some have even attempted to get into similar games, like Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff, a try, but many players have still been left sore by the shut-down.

2025 also marked the cancellation of an anticipated EA-published game: Black Panther.

Shut-downs like these are unfortunate, and there are bound to be more in the future. As fresh titles come out, like the highly-anticipated Battlefield 6, EA may continue to add to its 2025 shut-down list.
