Summary

  • Superman is receiving positive reviews and is a financial success for Warner Bros. And DC Studios.
  • Edi Gathegi, who plays the scene-stealing Mister Terrific, is more focused on promoting the film than his own performance
  • Gathegi's role in Superman gives him a chance for superhero stardom, as he has a promising future in the DC Universe.

Unsurprisingly, the recently-released Superman is the talk of the proverbial town. Critics are loving it, fans are eating it up, and it is making a whole bunch of money for Warner Bros. And DC Studios. That being said, one scene-stealing star of the film isn't all that interested in the praise coming his way.

After years of buildup and anticipation, Superman has truly kicked the DC Universe (DCU) multimedia franchise off in style. Whether it's praising David Corenswet's earnest portrayal of Clark Kent, celebrating Nicholas Hoult's manifestation of pure hatred as Lex Luthor, or lauding Rachel Brosnahan's effortless rendering of all things Lois Lane, pretty much everyone is having a great time with the new superhero flick. Long gone is Zack Snyder's brooding take on the Last Son of Krypton and in its place is James Gunn hopeful incarnation of the character. The Big Blue Boy Scout is back to being the personification of pure goodness, and it is putting butts in seats. Not just that, though, as the critical reception for Superman has been more positive than 2013's Man of Steel while also performing well with audiences on CinemaScore and PostTrak. All in all, it seems like congratulations are in order across the board as DC Studios looks forward to Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface next year.

Superman (2025): 10 Best Comics To Read Before Seeing The Movie, Ranked

Comics like All-Star Superman and the New 52's Superman Unchained are excellent choices to read before watching James Gunn's new Superman movie.

When Extra caught up with Mister Terrific actor Edi Gathegi on Superman's red carpet premiere, he had quite a bit to say about being labeled a "scene-stealer." "I'm very excited because I've been hearing about this film and I haven't seen it," he began. "I'm in it, but that's not my focus. I want to see a good movie. I'm a Superman fan, I'm a comic book movie fan, and I want to have a great experience at the theater so I can tell people they need to go out and do the same thing." He also had nothing but positive things to say about Superman director James Gunn: "This man is one of the true creative geniuses of our industry and our time. He's very passionate about the whole art of storytelling. He's in love with every aspect, and he really loves actors, which is good for us."

Superman Star Edi Gathegi Is More Interested In Promoting The Movie Than Himself

Even if Gathegi doesn't see himself as a scene-stealer (or is simply too humble to say it out loud), his Mister Terrific is undeniably a standout in the film. Of course, comic book movie fans have known about Gathegi's talent for years, as he memorably played Darwin in 2011's X-Men: First Class. The Kenyan-American actor has also been a stealer of scenes since the early days of his career on shows like House and Veronica Mars and in films like Gone Baby Gone and Twilight.

"He's got a creative mind and what he's going to do with this universe, I think, is a blessing for people." - Edi Gathegi on James Gunn

Starring in Superman as Mister Terrific has given Gathegi a second chance at superhero stardom. With all due respect to Darwin, Mister Terrific is a far more storied superhero. Mister Terrific has appeared in various comics, movies, television shows, and video games over the years. Darwin is just one of many lesser mutants in Marvel Comics that was stupidly killed off in X-Men: First Class. Given how much screentime James Gunn gave Gathegi in Superman, it feels safe to say that he'll have a role going forward in the DCU.

Superman is currently available to see in theaters worldwide.
