Ekos is a new transmedia universe inspired by the works of comic book writer Geoff Johns and late comic book artist Michael Turner. It was borne out of a joint initiative by California-based Aspen Comics and Marvel Studios founder David Maisel. The first volume of the inaugural Ekos comic book series hit the market in August 2025, just under a year following a highly successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $238,000 from 1,768 backers, surpassing its funding goal nearly five times over.

Ekos Vol. 2 Reveals Cover Ahead of Kickstarter Launch

Ahead of yet another crowdfunding effort, Aspen Comics shared the cover art for Ekos Volume 2, which The Best War Games can exclusively reveal. The vivid artwork comes from Kabuki creator and Daredevil illustrator David W. Mack, who also authored the Cover D for the first volume of Ekos. The watercolor-style illustration features a central composition and heavily relies on complementary contrasts, mainly blues and reds, pairing them with soft gradients to evoke a dreamlike atmosphere.

Over the course of his career, Mack has explored many art styles, ranging from intricate illustrations to more dynamic imagery seen in his Marvel Comics works. The Ekos Volume 2 cover is largely emblematic of this eclectic style, mixing precise anatomy with some impressionistic elements. Like its predecessor, the upcoming comic book is expected to feature multiple cover variants.

Story-wise, Ekos Volume 2 will continue Grell's journey of discovery. The first volume saw the protagonist encounter many of Michael Turner's characters, including superstars Grace (Soulfire) and Aspen (Fathom), who adorn Mack's newly shared cover artwork. Ekos marks the first time all of these characters have joined forces in a single universe, with Volume 2 being set to continue exploring their interactions with humans and issues within their realms.

The Ekos Volume 2 Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to launch on October 21 and will run for 30 days. The comic book's creative team comprises writer J.T. Krul, pencil artist Alex Konat, color artist Peter Steigerwald, letterer Josh Reed, and digital inker Mark Roslan. Like many successful Kickstarter campaigns, the crowdfunding effort for Ekos Volume 1 included a plethora of backer incentives, ranging from art prints and stickers to bonus pages and trading cards. Volume 2 is expected to continue this practice, though finer details of its Kickstarter campaign have yet to be announced. Ekos is planned to have three volumes in total.
