Ahead of the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion later this month, developer FromSoftware has announced that Elden Ring has sold over 25 million copies. FromSoftware's beloved open-world Soulslike has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent months, with legions of fans returning to the Lands Between in droves as the debut of the game's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC nears. The first and last Elden Ring expansion promises players access to a massive never-before-seen area to explore, powerful unique bosses to defeat, and even more exotic gear to add to the armory of their Tarnished.
It is difficult to oversell the impact of Elden Ring on the wider gaming community in the months following its release back in 2022. Elden Ring drew widespread acclaim from both fans and critics alike and was almost universally praised for its evolution of the Soulslike formula. Although it was a new IP, Elden Ring quickly became the best-selling FromSoftware title, with over 12 million units sold worldwide within just the first two weeks of its release. For context, the next best-selling FromSoftware game, Dark Souls 3, took four years to reach 10 million copies sold. The title's success was so monumental that even Elden Ring developers were confused regarding why it was such a massive hit.
Elden Ring Creator Approves Players' Use of Guides
The visionary director behind some of FromSoftware's most popular Souls games validates players who use the help of guides.
Now, new sales figures from FromSoftware revealed that Elden Ring is still attracting new players two years after its release. The official FromSoftware Twitter account shared a post announcing that Elden Ring had shipped 25 million copies worldwide, a notable spike considering the developer previously reported that Elden Ring had reached 23 million sales in February of this year.
Shadows of the Erdtree Will Be the Lone Elden Ring Expansion
This boost in sales was likely due in part to the impending release of the highly anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. Many fans expect the number of copies sold will leap once more after the DLC launches on June 21, especially since director Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree will be the only Elden Ring expansion before FromSoftware moves on to other projects.
However, it is worth noting that a majority of players are currently unable to play Shadow of the Erdtree, as the Elden Ring DLC is locked behind
Mohg, Lord of Blood, who is arguably one of the hardest optional bosses of the base game. Not only is the fight itself difficult, but the path to the arena is already rather convoluted, requiring the completion of the entire quest line of
White Mask Varré and enough levels to fight through hordes of powerful mobs.
