Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree offers players an entirely new region to explore, along with new equipment and secrets to be found. And for fans, that also means that there will be a gathering of optional, dangerous bosses that can be felled for valuable rewards. One such foe can be found in the Shadow Keep area and can be easily missed if you are not observant.
The Scadutree Avatar boss looks intimidating, especially if you are facing it for the very first time. This three-phased fight can overwhelm players who are ill-prepared, so make sure you have gotten enough Scadutree Blessings to alleviate its damage and give yourself more of a fighting chance. This guide will provide all the vital details to help you beat the boss and recover the rewards after.
Where to Find the Scadutree Avatar
You might have missed out on this boss if you did not fully explore the Shadow Keep in the Scadu Altus. After draining the flooded areas of the keep, you will have to make your way over to the main cathedral on the lower levels. The area with several exploding creatures is the right spot.
Venture deeper and look to the right of the room where a headless Marika statue sits. This will lead you to a room with two staircases going up, head through the door in between them and descend. Keep following the path until the end, and there will be the glowing gates to lead you to the Scadutree Avatar.
Preparing for the Scadutree Avatar
With its large size and tendrils, players can expect plenty of AoE attacks from the boss, in addition to its use of the fire element. So make sure you have plenty of fire resistance with your gear, adding the
Flamedrake Talisman +3 is also highly recommended if you wish to get up close and personal with the boss. Similarly, it can also cause tremendous bleeding damage, so that's another aspect to consider when choosing your armor.
As for your weapons, using the same element of fire against it is actually a great way to even the playing field. The likes of the
Blasphemous Blade,
Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear, and even Messmer's
Spear of the Impaler will work wonders against the boss. Incantations and sorceries of the like can also be used, although the time required to fire them off might not be a good way to deal with the Scadutree Avatar.

How to Beat the Scadutree Avatar in Shadow of the Erdtree
While you can always count on the help of Spirit Ashes, such as the
Fire Monk Ashes, to deal additional fire damage to the boss, it is actually quite manageable to deal with it alone. There are some things to keep in mind always to make it easier. The first is always to aim for its head to deal extra damage, and when it starts swinging, dodging to the left will avoid any damage most of the time, just watch out for the slam afterward.
Phase 1
At the start, it is helpful for players to recognize the attacks that the Scadutree Avatar can throw out. When you are near, it can slam its head or swing its arms around, so always look to dodge sideways and get in your hits whenever possible. At range, it might send its tendrils into the ground and send spikes toward the player, avoid this by dodging through. Once its health is low enough, it will fall and lower its head, making it possible to get a critical hit for massive damage. This will also ensure it has less health moving into the second phase.
Phase 2
Watch out for the starting charge, it will repeat this several times, so always be ready to dodge to the side just before it connects. In addition to the previous attacks, the Scadutree Avatar adds a few more new moves into the rotation. If you see it bunker down and the floor starts glowing in different areas, start moving to avoid getting hit by vines rising out of the ground. Having an ally here to distract the boss might be a good idea.
For ranged players, it will also target you with beams of damaging light. You will need to dodge to the sides just when the four beams converge in order to stay safe. Once again, get your critical hit in when possible.
Phase 3
In the last phase, get out of the way of those charges, and get ready for sustained aggression from the Scadutree Avatar. Aside from all of the attacks listed above, it will try to unleash a wide-ranging attack that seemingly blankets the entire arena. When you see the boss rearing up and starts glowing, it is a warning to get as far away as possible to get ready for a series of explosions coming your way. The only reliable way to avoid damage is to roll through at the very last moment, so it will take some practice if you are not careful.
Keep plugging away and be sure to execute the critical hit at the end once its HP is depleted. Failure to do so at this juncture will invalidate all of your efforts before, as you will need to restart the fight entirely. Defeating the Scadutree Avatar will reward players with 260,000 Runes as well as the Remembrance of the Shadow Sunflower. There is also
Miquella's Great Rune awaiting players, which can be used during the final boss fight in Shadow of the Erdtree to prevent instantaneous death from being grabbed twice.
