  • Elden Ring's PC version suffers from unstable frame rates due to mouse control apps.
  • Disabling these may improve performance for Elden Ring PC players.

Applications that control computer mice may be causing unstable frame rates in the PC version of Elden Ring, the game's developer, FromSoftware, has warned players. Shadow of the Erdtree, Elden Ring's new expansion, has been criticized for its technical problems, among other things.

Elden Ring has enjoyed near-universal acclaim since it was released in early 2022, but much like most modern releases, the RPG is not without its fair share of issues. As reported in a recent video by Digital Foundry, an outlet that specializes in analyzing game hardware and software, FromSoftware's dark fantasy experience still lacks features that are expected in major releases, such as support for refresh rates higher than 60 FPS. Additionally, Elden Ring suffers from the same problems that players encountered at launch like stuttering even after the title's long-awaited DLC dropped on June 21, and this has caused many to leave negative reviews on Shadow of the Erdtree's Steam page. Fortunately, FromSoftware has discovered a possible fix for one particular issue with the PC version of the game.

In a recent Twitter post, FromSoftware's official player support account revealed that applications which control computer mice may be causing unstable frame rates for anyone playing Elden Ring on the PC. The company has advised fans to close these kinds of programs before trying to play the game again. This fix was announced after Elden Ring's 1.12.2 update, which went live on June 25, noted that FromSoftware plans to release more bug fixes in a future patch. The latest update also made tweaks to Scadutree Blessing, the Shadow of the Erdtree-specific mechanic that increases player damage output and decreases damage received in the DLC's new area.

  • Disable applications that control the mouse.

Bandai Namco, the publisher of Elden Ring, previously had to remind players to level up their Scadutree Blessing as more and more people started to complain about the expansion being too hard. However, several content creators and figures in the games industry defended FromSoftware's approach to difficulty in the DLC, including Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt.

Despite the criticism directed towards it, Shadow of the Erdtree has sold more than five million copies. The expansion also became the highest-rated video game DLC on review aggregate site OpenCritic, dethroning 2016's Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Elden Ring game director and FromSoftware CEO Hidetaka Miyazaki previously claimed that Shadow of the Erdtree would be the game's only DLC. In a recent interview, the executive revealed that he would love to make a traditional JRPG someday.
