Summary

  • Over half of Elden Ring players have not met the requirements to access the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
  • Defeating optional boss Mohg is necessary to unlock the new DLC content, but it's a challenging task.
  • Players should check saves to ensure they have defeated Mohg and are prepared for the DLC's launch on June 21.

Based on the game's achievement stats across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, it seems as though over half of Elden Ring players are currently missing the requirement to play the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Elden Ring's long-awaited expansion is set to drop on June 21, giving players the chance to explore a brand-new area and fight a variety of tough-as-nails bosses. But like with other FromSoftware games, accessing the Elden Ring DLC is easier said than done.

In many other games, accessing an expansion is as simple as downloading the content and booting it up, but FromSoftware likes to make things tricky. There are often major prerequisites that must be met for players to access DLC in FromSoftware games, and Elden Ring is no exception to the rule. It's long been known that Elden Ring players must have the optional boss Mohg, Lord of Blood defeated on their current playthrough if they want to play the DLC. Unfortunately, data indicates that the majority of Elden Ring fans simply have not defeated Mohg and, therefore, will be unable to access Shadow of the Erdtree when it launches on June 21 unless they take the boss down.

Elden Ring: What To Do Before Shadow of the Erdtree

Though the only requirement to access SOTE is to defeat two bosses, there are a lot of things players can do to prepare for the new Elden Ring DLC.

On Xbox, only 22.99% of players have earned the achievement Shardbearer Mohg, which is awarded to anyone who manages to defeat Mohg. Around 37% of Steam users have the achievement, while roughly 35% of PlayStation gamers have unlocked it. This means that over half of Elden Ring's player base currently has not met the requirements for accessing the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. There is still plenty of time between now and June 21 for players to hunt down Mohg and take him down, so it will be interesting to see how many more Elden Ring fans manage to unlock this particular achievement/trophy.

How to Get to Mohgwyn Palace in Elden Ring

One of the reasons why many Elden Ring players have not defeated Mohg is that he's an optional boss that's tricky to find. Mohg can be found in Mohgwyn Palace, and there are a couple of different ways of getting there. The fastest way is to complete the PvP quest tied to White-Faced Varre, which requires players to meet the NPC at Rose Church and invade three other players using the Festering Bloody Finger item.

Players then have to soak the Lord of Blood's Favor in the blood of a dead maiden. Speaking with Varre after the task is complete will award players with the Pureblood Knight's Medal, which can be used to teleport directly to Mohgwyn's Palace. Mohg is an extremely difficult boss to fight early on, though, so it's recommended players hold off on fighting him until late in their playthrough. Instead of doing Varre's quest, late-game players also have the option of using the portal in the Consecrated Snowfields to reach Mohg.

It should be noted that even those that already have the Shardbearer Mohg achievement may not necessarily be able to access the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Elden Ring encourages New Game+ runs, so it's entirely possible that someone who has defeated Mohg already has since started a New Game and will have to beat him all over again to gain access to the new content coming in Shadow of the Erdtree. Needless to say, it's definitely important for Elden Ring fans to check their saves between now and when Shadow of the Erdtree comes out so they can make the necessary preparations to jump into the DLC right away.
